Week 11 in Korea – Christmas in the Field

Wow this week was amazing and busy so I am just jumping right into it!

Tuesday 12/23 – We had a great day, we visited some less actives at their restaurant and he needed help covering old pictures, so I got on a sketchy ladder for him and covered them with some sticky brown paper which took a while but was good to help him out! Also that night I did LPP (language progression program) pass off with the AP and passed so I am now a certified teacher in the Korean language so that is pretty cool!

Wednesday 12/24 -We had zone conference and it was AMAZING!!! We had training from the AP’s and President and his wife which were absolutely amazing! I got to see my MTC companion and a few other kids from the MTC which was awesome! We ate and after we watched Ephraim’s rescue! I will share more about that later! I truly love that movie so much though and was touched by it! After conference we went Caroling with our Bishop around to investigators and members houses. It was really fun! After we were done we went to a members house and had a really good meal for Christmas eve and some yummy yummy snacks! It was really good!

Thursday 12/25 – Today was Christmas! My favorite!! Haha it was awesome! I opened my presents from my family and Grandma and Grandpa Baldwin and got some awesome stuff and yummy food! Thanks so much for the Christmas presents! For Christmas we decided to go to outback steak house as a district for lunch! It was really good. Me and Elder Smith got chicken and a burger and split it and it was so good!! Haha I loved it! After we went out and proselyted. We went to a popular subway station and held up a sign of the nativity and I took out little dvd player and went and showed people who would stop and watch! It was cool! After that we went Caroling some more to investigators and members! And that was Christmas in Korea!

Friday 12/26 -I got to call my wonderful family today!!!!!!! It was so amazing to hear from all of them and talk to all of them! I loved it so much! It was awesome and I was so so happy! We went out and had some lessons which went well and got two new investigators today! That night we went to a super super nice buffet with a member who took us there! It was awesome and so so good and I had some real sushi! Haha

Saturday 12/27 – We got a new investigator today which was awesome and another Christmas miracle! I got a new grammar book to study and it is awesome! I have all ready learned so much from it!

Sunday 12/28 – Great day! we had a great church and then we had lunch with a member! We had bone soup and it was sooooo delicious! Haha and we got yet another new investigator, that makes 4 four Christmas week! What a Christmas miracle that was!

Okay so one miracle that I wanted to share with you this week was when I was watching Ephraim’s rescue! I thought a lot about my ancestors and the movie really touched me in a different way then usual! I really loved one part of the movie when Ephraim is about to heal Thomas’s feet, Thomas’s mother asks Ephraim, “Are you a holy man?” He responds and says, “I have so many faults I cannot count them.” She then asks, “Then how is it that you do these miracles.” He raised his head and responded simply enough, “I Try.” Those two words hit me with such power. I realized in that moment that even through all my imperfections I can be great and reach the potential that God has in store. After all the atonement was made not as a back up plan for if we sin but as the plan of salvation for when we do sin! We all are imperfect but I know that if I simply wake up and truly try like the pioneers of old then I will be able to do amazing things! I loved these words! I know God lives and I know that if we simply try we will be able to succeed! I love you all so much and hope you had a merry Christmas and have a happy new year!

Love,

Elder Houston

Merry Christmas Everyone!!!

This week has been ridiculously good and packed! Haha I have so much to say and not enough time to say it. So I willl do my best to narrow it down! Il jump right into it!

Tuesday 12/16– We did service and our church gate was frozen closed so we chiseled that until it could open and cleared the church of all the snow and ice and then had a big snowball fight and it was so so so much fun to do some good solid physical labor and have a fun snowball fight! During the snowball fight the Korean Elders went in the church and accidentally locked us out…. Haha so I had Elder Smith spot me….. (mom you may to have Dad read this fist and tell you if it is okay for you to read) ……..and I climbed up the side of our church building on the icy bricks of our church to a second story window and opened it and crawled through! It was way cool but looking at it after I think if I would have thought about it a little I would not have done it. But hey it was good! I didn’t get a picture though….. so next time it snows really hard we will have to do it again to get a pic! JK MOM!! And I also got music for my present that day for 12 days of Christmas!!!!! A flash drive and the I pod worked as well! And yess I saw all music and I love it! It is all perfect thank you so much!

Wednesday 12/17– Today I did LPP Language Progression Program and I passed off with the Zone leader so now I will do it with the AP tomorrow and if I pass I will be a certified teacher in Korean! It was way hard and I hope I can do it tomorrow with the AP! I also started exchange with Elder Smith my homie! I also got the cutest nativity ever for 12 days of Christmas and set it up under my tree! haha it was fantastic!

Thursday 12/18 – My Homie Brother from anotha motha Elder Smith and I wen on exchange! It was so so fun and one of my most successful days of missionary work! Haha our stats for the day were awesome! I learned a ton from him! He is awesome! We did some service and did Xmas party practice (we did that everyday this week.) And we found a new investigator. It was sweet! Haha my gift was letters from my family today! I loved them and was so happy to get them! Thank you so so much for them!

Friday 12/19 – We had lunch together and tried to get guitar fixed but the guy didn’t want to give me a deal so I decided to fix it myself. I am almost don’t and can play silent night on it. So we play guitar together and sing songs at night sometimes! It is pretty fun! We also decorated for the party and practiced! My gift was candy canes! They are so good! Thank you so much for them! I love them!

Saturday 12/20 – Okay…. Today was packed full of stuff and I have to cut a lot out but I will do my best to make it all make sense! So it was Elder Bandley’s birthday and we ate at our fav. chinese restaurant together for his birthday. After we went to the church and decorated and practiced and got ready for the party which started at 6! We also taught English during this same time and we gave the message after English class and it went great. Then we got back to working on the party. I was having a bit of a hard time and feeling home sick. And I was playing Joseph in the nativity of missionaries and we were singing in Korea and I had to say the right stuff and I was really nervous. And I was really missing home and Christmas time. And so I went in the little bathroom and prayed so hard for some help and some strength to get through the holiday and be able to make this a great experience for other people. I prayed until I smelled the familiar smell of smoke and i knew there must be an investigator in the bathroom with me. I came out and saw one of my investigators. Eruca the mongolian here for the party! I was so happy to see him and walked in to the party together. We had one other investigator there, (the knew one that Elder Smith and I  found) and Elder smith and his companion had 2 investigators there including another Mongolian who is awesome! Anyways, it ended up beig sooo soo fun! 3 of my good friends (2 members one investigator) were conducting the party and they were leading some fun games. They called me out to come up so Elder smith in I had to play charades in Korean. All the people got a kick out of watching and listening to that! Haha then we went out to get ready for the nativity and play we were going to do as missionaries. As I was getting ready I got kind of nervous again and thought about how Heavenly Father had already made the night so much better. Little did I know that it would get even better. As I was getting dressed, the bishop came out in the hall and told me to hurry and come in. I ran in to see the end of the slideshow and was confused until at the very end of the slide show was the video that Bishop had taken of me doing an ally oop dunk! Hahaha it was in slow motion and that is how the Christmas slideshow ended! Everyone was like “wow” cause that doesn’t happen a lot in Korea. I was so happy and was so grateful for my awesome Bishop!  Then we did the play and it went awesome! It was so cool! I was Joseph and it was just a blast! After we ate and talked to investigators and it was so much fun. There is an adorable little kid that just loved to follow me around. He helps me clean and does anything I do with me! And always wants to wear my name tag. Haha I helped him read my name tag in Korean and he always says Sister Houston instead of Elder Houston! (in Korean of course) but it is just so cute! So he was with me all night! It was just fantastic night! That night I got home and reflected on the miracle and overwhelming answer to my prayer I had received! As soon as I got home, I knelt and fervently thanked the Lord and know that through him I can make it through this time of Christmas and know my family and friends will too and will have a great time as well! I truly know the meaning of Christmas this year as well. My 12 days of Christmas gift was 8 tide pens! Wow was I in need of those! Thank you so so much!!

Sunday 12/21 -Church was grand! We home taught a family and had no prep time so we winged it but it was great! I got fudge for twelve days of Christmas and it was delicious!

Wow what a week it has been! I have loved it! I know that Christ was born of Mary in Bethlehem and that he was raised by Mary and Joseph and had to learn and progress and came into this world that whoso believeth on him the same shall be saved! I know that our Heavenly Father truly loves us more then we can understands and he answers prayers. Family and friends I love you! And want you to have a very…….

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Love,

Elder Houston

This week was Swell!

Hello Family!  This week has been so swell! I am just going to jump right into it!

Tuesday 12/9 – Temple day! I love the temple! It is seriously such a blessing to be able to go! We played B-ball as well for p-day and it was super fun! Then later we practiced for our Christmas ward party!

Wednesday 12/10 – I gave the Christlike attribute in district meeting and after district meeting went on exchange with our zone leader Elder 최수범 (chae-su-bam). We went to his area 길음 (kidum) which is big city Seoul! I was amazed at how small Jangwi is! haha we did some street proselyting and did some studies and it was fun! We slept with to other Elders in their mansion of a house! Haha Elder Lundberg and another Korean Elder. I really love our zone leader I was with and love Elder Lundberg as well! He lived in Montana and was a firefighter and me and him talked for so long as I was on exchange.

Thursday 12/11 – The next day we woke up and did studies and went out and proselyted for a minute and then came back and ate and were about to go back out but the my temporary zone leader companion got way sick and so we had to stay and I just studied more. Later they found out that he has swollen intestines and needed to rest for a minute! But the exchange was really fun! That night I was back with my companion and we taught a guy who was a referral and learned he has a lot of “problems” with loving and …. to put it easy a lot of problems not being a psychopath. Yeah but he is progressing now and we hope to continue to help him!

Friday 12/12 – Today we did weekly planning and were really bummed at our lack of investigators. We said a prayer after asking for our hard work to pay off in some way. We tried to call a guy that we had scheduled an appointment with but it seemed like he blocked us. We both felt the prompting to still go to the spot we were supposed to meet. We went and he showed up! We were so excited. His phone was broke but he was interested. He is Mongolian and speaks a pretty good Korean and English but doesn’t understand any gospel things in Korean but he does in English so… We teach in English!! And I led the discussions! We gave him a Mongolian Book of Mormon and committed him to read. The lesson went really good and he said “I will read this whole book to find out if it is true!” Yeahhh!!!!! Also I went on exchange with Elder Jarrett that night.

Saturday 12/13– This is also a miracle day after our prayer for help. We called and got permission to participate in a ward basketball activity if we had investigators there. Turns out the Mongolian (Eruca is his name) loves basketball so we invited him. We have also been trying it meet with a half Russian, half korean kid ,but he has not really wanted to but we knew he loved basketball so we called him and he said he would come. So we got up and headed to the church to meet our investigators and we had 1 out of 2 to come which is better than usual so we were way happy. The half Russian kid came!

We played basketball with out ward and bishop and it was really fun! We also built a really good relationship with the half russian kid and hope to meet soon. We were a little discouraged because Eruca didn’t show up! But we kept going with hope and faith. That was with all our district but then Elder Jarrett and I went back to our house and studied. Elder Jarrett isn’t great at Korean but I love him to death! He is so kind and loving and also from Montana! We had a funny experience. We tried to order chicken for dinner and then about 20 minute later a guy showed up with pizza and pasta for dinner for us….. Hahahah so we paid him and ate it and it was stinking hilarious!!!!!!

Sunday 12/14 – We generally have about 3 people who we have committed to church but 90 percent of the time none show up! We again had 3 people committed and we went to pick up 이동희 one of our investigators for church. We showed up and he had already started waking to church. We were amazed! All the elders and people who know him were amazed that he came. It was a huge miracle! Wow. So I left my companion with him and went on exchange with Elder Smith (My Bruda) to go out and wait for our other too that we had invited. We had invite Eruca to church but had a little doubt because he didn’t come to basketball the day before. I was waiting with Elder Smith and he said “I don’t think he is coming man.” Because it was about time to go into church. I said well have you been praying? He said no. So I said well start praying. Haha just jokingly. After another minute it was time to go so he said come on. I said ok and looked down the road one last time. And I thought I saw the beautiful sight of purple pants on a Mongolian. I said wait. And he said let’s go get him so we walked down and it was him! 2 investigators out of 3!! Whoaaaaaaa!!! It was so dang exciting! Haha I had Elder Smith translate sacrament into English for him and after we had a lesson. He was already in 2 Nephi chapter 6 and had been praying! The lesson went great and he stayed all through church and even stayed for a member baptism after and the ward was good to him and he even stayed after that to help set up for a Christmas party! He really liked it and we meet him again tomorrow! He has no background so we have a lot to teach but wow we are excited!

Well family and friends! I love you all so much and appreciate everything you have done and continue to do for me! I know that Jesus Christ was born of Mary into the city Bethlehem and I know that God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten son. I know that through him we can be saved and return to our father! I know our Father in Heaven loves us as does his son! I am so grateful for my family and friends that they have put into my life to help me learn and progress! I love you all and can’t wait to talk to you next week!

Love,

Elder Houston

My Lovely Family

Family!!! I love you all so much! The pictures of the boys looking at my plaque in the church that Abbey sent me almost made me cry! Haha I am turning into such a baby here. I love you all so much and miss you tons! It got really cold here in Korea! Negative 10 pretty consistently here in Jangwi! Haha all places in Seoul are super different in temperature and weather because it is so huge! Haha. My jacket keeps me really warm though so it is all good!

 Okay so my week

It's Cold

It’s Cold

It's Cold

It’s Cold

Tuesday (12/1): Got my big coat out for the first time and haven’t taken it off since! We met with a few investigators today and gave one some cookies I made for him because we haven’t been able to meet with him and wanted to make contact so that was good.

Wednesday (12/2): We had a zone training meeting which was really good. We ate some pig intestines and pig hearts with our zone and had the meeting which was really fun. Then we proselyted for the rest of the day.

Trying to show our breath in the cold

Thursday (12/3): We had lunch with our less active family at their restaurant and sang them a song! It was good! We had a very funny experience on the way back. I would like to tell you about it. We were with our district Elders and on the way back we went past a lake that was frozen over. Elder Smith stopped to have a gander and I decided to do Dad’s little fake thing and act like I was pushing him in. Haha He said I don’t know if that could support me. I said it looked thick enough. Haha I helped lower him to the lake but it cracked immediately so I pulled him back up and he didn’t get wet at  all. Haha a man with a dog happened to be watching and he must have thought that Elder Smith but all his weight on the ice. Haha he threw his dog on and it supported his dog so we all watched with curiosity as he stepped with absolute confidence onto the 3 inch thin ice. It immediately broke and he went in! it was only to about his thighs so he quickly got out but we all had such a hard time holding back our laughter. He was laughing his head off and we felt bad but couldn’t help but laugh as well. We couldn’t believe what we just had seen. Haha

Friday (12/4): We had a lesson with an investigator Leedonghi and it went good. We also had a lesson with a less active member which went really good as well.

Saturday (12/5): We taught english and after we headed back to eat dinner, on our way we saw Brother Bak and a few priests from our ward outside his house. He said Elders my mom is cooking a big dinner right now come and eat! So we did! And it was delicious! I especially loved the Quail eggs! It was all super good. After he said that they were having a young men activity and had 2 investigators coming. We called and got permission from our zone leaders and we went bowling and got a number in one night! It was soooo much fun! Then we had a district meeting to plan a christmas party.

Sunday (12/6): We had church and after sacrament Brother Han asked us to come meet his friend (and investigator). We met him and had a member present lesson that went fantastic with him. It was awesome and we will meet with him again! We had dinner with our district later and it was a blast with all of them.  Elder Smith and I made a ton of food to break our fast with and everyone just ate so much! It was so fun and we had a really good time doing it! Then we had a Christmas party practice because we are doing something for the ward christmas party!

Okay that is all for that week! It was a grand week in Korea and I can’t wait for the next week! I love you all more then you know! I am so blessed by knowing every single one of you! I appreciate all you do for me and all of your prayers in my behalf! I love you all so much!

2nd transfer 시작(start)

Okay I am officially in my second transfer in Korea! Wow! That is just crazy! It is also December and almost Christmas time! Wow that is crazy too! It is so crazy how different life is here compared to your lives at home! Hahaha but I get so excited reading your letters and I am having so much fun and learning so much! I’ll take you through another week in Korea.

Monday 11/24 – It was the best PDay! Emailing was so awesome and I was so happy after and then I went to go play basketball.  I was nervous because everyone always told me how good my companion was and he wanted to go pro, maybe the NBA, and he always said how he was going to the NBA and would say that the other players were really good too. So I went there expecting to be playing with some college grade athletes. I was excited to play but when we got there everybody was not nearly as good as I expected! I was disappointed while watching but it ended up being so so so fun!  I felt like I established myself in the mission a little bit which was nice. I played with and against the AP’s and zone leaders from all over and we had a lot of fun with them! We also played with a member and a potential investigator and just had a lot of fun with all of them!

Tuesday 11/25 – today we had a lot of good appointments scheduled and they all got cancelled or we got punked. It was a pretty rough day all in all. But I want to share a little miracle that happened. So sometimes on your mission hard things build up and you are holding it all down and something little just is the “straw that breaks the camels back”. Well I got home and my razor had died so I plugged it in and it wouldn’t charge. That seems like such a minor thing, but for some reason that was the straw and I was just distraught about the dumb razor. I didn’t want to throw a nice razor from home away because it wouldn’t charge. I called the ZL’s and got permission to buy a new razor and so I went and bought a cheap razor from nearby store and went back to charge it. I had been praying my razor would work and had one last desperate thought. What if the new razors charger will fit my razor? I told my companion and he said no way because it is a korean plug not american. Well, I pulled it out and it looked fairly close to the right size so I got my hopes all up again! So I tried to plug it in and……… drum roll………. IT did NOT work! There was a part in the middle that was blocking the plug from going in. I thought no way but didn’t want to give up, so I got a knife and I cut out the middle part thinking it would break my razor and I turned the plug backwards to plug-in, and at this point I was laughing at my pathetic attempt to fix this razor. I said one last pray and had one last ounce of faith that this would work. So I plugged it in and …. the green light turned on meaning it was charging! I looked at my companion with a shocked face and he looked down and could not believe it was charging. I let it sit for a minute and picked it up and it had a charge to it and could work. I was so grateful and this small and simple miracle meant the world to me. I quickly went to my room and thanked the Lord so much for this miracle to help me look forward to the future! My razor works great now and now I have two but that is okay! It was such a miracle and I know it was and answer to my prayers and even though it was small and simple our Heavenly Father knows exactly what we need. To any person or at any other time that situation could mean nothing but to me at that time, it meant everything.

Wednesday 11/26 – We met with a less active kid. He was awesome and it went really well and he and his family came to church on Sunday! And transfers happened today but I didn’t meet the new missionaries in our district.

Thursday 11/27 – So today we started out and about half way through the day we got a text saying something about thanksgiving. Ha then I remembered that it was thanksgiving. No, I did not do anything special for thanksgiving except for show my thanks by serving my Heavenly Father. I met our new missionaries today. One sister and one Elder, Elder Smith. At first I didn’t know about him but I have ended up really liking him a lot! We also met with our less active friends parents. They are always at work so we went to their restaurant and visited with them and they came to church and it was a miracle and a blessing. We were super busy so I didn’t get a huge chance to reflect on all I am grateful for but then when we got home I said a very long prayer and had the opportunity to think and reflect on how much I am grateful for and the people I am grateful for. I couldn’t find an end. I thanked my Father in Heaven for so many things and had the opportunity to think of all I am grateful for before I went to bed so I did get to have a little personal thanksgiving that night so that was amazing!

Friday 11/28 – Not much today. We visited an investigator old couple but they were really sick so we got them some fruit and left! That is it!

Saturday 11/29 -We met with our investigator 이동희 today and it went pretty good! and that is it for today

Sunday 11/30 – We had a baptismal service for one of the other Elders investigators! It was way cool to have one! President came to the baptisms! He comes to all the Jangwi baptisms! Haha! Then that night We had a dinner appointment with the stake president and some other members of the ward. It was way fun. Elder Smith got pretty sick later in the week and Sunday,  but I got to talk to him a lot at the dinner and that is where I found out he is cool! I like him! He seems more real compared to others if that makes sense! Haha and me and him sat next to each other and we are both similar build  and typical americans so we were the jokes of the night for everybody. They had a good time teasing us but we were good about it and they think it is way fun when me, as a greeny responds to something they said because I understood it, so I try really hard! Haha it was a fun night! That night we went back and all apartments in Korea have automatic locks and we got back and ours would not let us in. So we called the AP’s and had to go buy a battery and attach it to the outside of the lock in a way that would give it some juice and got in and hope it will work now! Haha that was fun!

That is about it for this week!  It has been another fun and crazy one! I know that God lives and he loves us. He gives us trials so we can grow and provides comfort and peace as we ask for it. I am learning so much and have so much more to learn. I love you all so much and miss you tons but I am so happy you are having a great time and keeping things tied down on that side of the world. Thank you for your love and prayers.  I feel it daily! I love you all so much!

Love,

Elder Houston
