솔날 (Solar)

Hello Family and Friends in St. George and around the world! This week in Korea it was Solar which is one of the 2 most popular holidays here! It is the new year celebration which goes by the Lunar calendar so that is why it is in February this year! It was on Thursday but is a 3 day holiday for the Koreans! It was a cool week and I will let you know how it all went!

Tuesday 2/17 -Just a regular day today! Proselyted and then I tried to make a stir fry for dinner that night and it was an epic fail but it was pretty funny even though we did not enjoy eating! It was a total experiment so I didn’t feel to bad. After our toilet somehow got clogged (hmmmm… don’t know what happened…..) so on the way back that night we had to buy a plunger and my companion saw “the ultimate plunger” his words, not mine and he had to buy it, so he did. It was around 8 bucks but it was pretty epic! He got back and was so excited to plunge! He started and it didn’t work! Hahahahah it was so funny! Oh man! but he kept going and then he got toilet water and stuff all over himself but did end up getting the toilet unplugged! It was interesting but hilarious and hey jack.. it worked in the end!

Wednesday 2/18 – We did service today and had a planning activity and then we did some proselyting!

Thursday 2/19 – Today was Solar! We had a mission conference! It was all the missionaries who are in Seoul! Which is most the missionaries in our mission! I also got to see Elder Reid my good friend from highschool! He was doing super well and we had a really good time talking for all of lunch! Haha it was a great time! For conference we watched a video about the Book of Mormon and a documentary of all these super smart scholars talking about it! It was really cool! We did a little activity after about the Book of Mormon. After that, we watched Meet the Mormons! It hasn’t come out yet in Korea but we got to watch it! It was so so good I really loved that show so much! Partially because I love movies and haven’t watched one for quite some time and also because it was just stinking good!  Then president Christensen gave us a little training about how it seems that others like that are great and amazing and it is easy to compare and get down on ourselves. He then reminded and stated with confidence that we were amazing as well and that by small and simple means the Lord truly does his work! It was an amazing training! I know for a fact that my mission president is called of God. I know because every time I talk to him or hear a training, he says exactly what I need to hear and answers my prayers and questions completely! It blows my mind still but man I love President Christensen and his wife! They are amazing people! It was a fun conference! I also got my valentines package from my family and it was soooooo amazing! Thank you so so much!

Friday 2/20 – Today was Deep Cleaning day! There isn’t a lot of people on the street during solar so we had our semi-annual deep cleaning! It was AWESOME! I didn’t realize how much I loved cleaning but wow it felt so good to clean and move heavy stuff around and clean and WOWIE I had fun! I also got to wear my duck dynasty stuff that was in my Valentines package so I was stocked about that too! We cleaned from 9 to 2 and cleaned every nook and cranny we could! After we did some weekly planning for another 3 hours. Then we had a planning meeting for a thing we were teaching on Sunday! Then we had a dinner appointment with the Stake President which was really fun! He is really rich and has a way nice apartment so it is always fun to go over there! Haha we gave a cool spiritual thought at the end and Elder Smith made me extend the commitment which used some really hard complicated words and phrases but I was grateful for the experience!

Saturday 2/21 – We had an appointment that fell through, but then met an awesome guy and picked him up as our new investigator! He is an awesome guy and seems to like us so we are excited about that! We also met a cool and slightly crazy guy from Boston. He was Korean but also American! He has a Boston accent and was a funny opinionated guy but we hope to meet him again and help him out a little! While we talked to him on the street for over an hour a fight broke out between two taxi drivers. It was crazy and they were in the middle of the street going at it. I didn’t know if it was okay for a missionary to go get involved in a fight to break up or not. But then the cops came and just let them finish pretty much and then put them back in their taxis and they drove off and it was over! Haha it was pretty dang exciting though!

Sunday 2/22 – We had church and for 3rd hour we taught all of our members about member missionary work! It went fairly well even though we didn’t have as much time as we would have liked! After church we just proselyted and studied!

Well that is all for this week! A lot of awesome good fun stuff happened! Missions are definitely hard but man they are amazing as well! I know that Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer and although it does require a lot of faith despite doubts at first I know that the Holy Spirit testifies of him and we can develop a  stronger faith in him! I know he came and taught and ministered on earth I know he suffered the atonement according to the will of his Father, I know he was rejected and walked completely alone at times and I know he died on the cross and rose again on that beautiful sunday morning! I know he lives and through him our Father’s beautiful plan for us can be fulfilled if we so choose to let it! I love this gospel and know it is true! I love and miss you all so much, can’t wait to talk next week!

Love,

Elder Houston

I’m Staying in Jangwii

Our District

Our District

Hey family and friends! So transfer calls came and I am staying in Jangwii with Elder Redd! This week was really good and I have some good stuff to write! So I am just going to jump right in!

Monday 2/9 – We got a call during emailing and had to leave quick to meet a guy! We met an old grandpa and picked him up as an investigator but he has a really hard time hearing! We did some proselyting and it was super cold today!

Tuesday 2/10 -Temple day! The temple was awesome, after we played some volleyball and basketball at a church building of ours! That night we met with a cool kid and got some chicken with him and picked him up as an investigator! He is way cool and we are excited to see where that goes!

Wednesday 2/11 – We had a really good District meeting today and Elder Smith gave a great training! Elder Jarrett gave the Spiritual thought and it really touched me! He did a really good job and shared about trials and adversity and overcoming them! That night we met a cool guy we have been trying to meet for some time now! He is very busy and super smart, he studies neuroscience at one of the top universities in Korea! He came and ate with us and we taught the restoration! He has some interest and listens well! We then when to English class and taught him! We have a good relationship with him now and I hope we get to meet with him again soon! It was also Grandma Baldwin’s Birthday today so Happy Birthday!!!!

Thursday 2/12 – Not much today did service and ate with our district and proselyted

Friday 2/13– We did some weekly planning today and then did some English flyering and then we got our transfer calls that night!

Saturday 2/14 – Happy Valentines! Today was a great day! We had our final music class and did some performances and it actually turned out pretty cool! Right after we had English class and Elder Redd and I gave the message! I had one of those moments were all the Korean I have studied in the last 6 months left my brain and I struggled! I was really frustrated but bounced back quick because a rich member of our English class took the whole class out to eat and it was really fun and I talked to a new kid at english class for a while at dinner at it was fun! I also got to read an awesome letter from Court and her family! It was awesome!

Sunday 2/15 -Church was really awesome! I talked to a lot of members and I understood a lot of church! Because of transfers and having Elder Lee and Sister Hong leaving we had two appointments with members all together as a district! So for lunch and dinner we ate with some members and I shared part of the message in both of the appointments! it was really fun and swell!

It was a really grand week as you can tell! This next coming week we have a huge Korean Holiday called “Solar” so we will have a different schedule a little bit this next week and a big combined conference with all missionaries in the S area! which is almost all of the missionaries! It will be cool! Thank you so much for emailing me this week everyone! I love you all so much and I am so happy to hear from you! I love and miss you all a ton but I know as I serve, you and I both will be blessed! I love you all so much! have a great week!

Love,

Elder Houston

Miracles and Blessings

Hey my lovely family and friends! I love you all so much and I am so happy to email you and hear from you this week! Every day I appreciate more my family and my friends who have influenced my life and appreciate all I had and have! I love you all! This week was amazing! I learned so much and saw some awesome miracles!

Tuesday 2/3 – The first miracle I saw came today! We were doing service when somebody called our phone. Elder Redd answered and they asked if he knew Elder Houston. He gave me the phone and I asked who it was! It was 에르카 (Eruca) Our Mongolian investigator that was progressing well but we lost contact with when his phone broke! He got a knew phone and I guess felt the prompting to call! I was so happy to hear from him! I talked to him for 15 minutes about how he was and he said he would come to church on Sunday. He didn’t come to church but I called him right after and we will meet him today at 3 because he was busy during church! It is way cool! Then I went on exchange with 이호현 장로님 (Elder Lee) and we did some proselyting (Street contacting) and met some really cool people!

Wednesday 2/4 – First I did some training! I got trained and then I did some training for our exchange! I always learn a lot when I get trained but learn even more when I train others! It was way good as always! We had zone training which I learned a lot from and got to see some of my really good friends like Elder Lundberg at Zone training! Elder Smith, Lundberg and I always have a great time together! I love them both a lot! That night Elder Redd and I gave the English class message! English class has been a little crazy cause some of the ladies there have been fighting but we have  been working really hard and our English class is improving!

Thursday 2/5 -We just did some proselyting today and then visited our less active but he wasn’t there so we left some rice cake for him.

Friday 2/6 – We did weekly planning and that night we passed out flyers for our English class at a university in our area.

Saturday 2/7– We had English class today and a kid came and wanted to learn piano and somebody was already teaching piano to somebody else so I taught him piano upstairs on a different piano! Haha so that was fun! Then we visited our less active’s restaurant! He was there and he let us in and made us some super yummy Ramen! He is an amazing man! He works form about 5 pm to about 5 am and prepares his restaurant from about 9 to 5 so he is exhausted and not healthy. We had another super good discussion. His heart opens more every time we visit him! We are hoping to get him to church soon! That night we got home and were quietly planning and the lady downstairs came up again. she comes up a lot to yell at us. We were literally sitting on chairs and planning being so quiet! And she came up and yelled at us for exercising and said we had to stop! We told her we weren’t and she just kept saying we were. She started yelling pretty bad and going crazy and getting scary. Unfortunately my companions emotions got the best of him for a moment and he yelled at her and slammed the door in her face when she was in mid sentence! It was an intense situation but she didn’t call the cops again and nothing happened but I did have to call Elder Smith our district leader and President and explain the situation again! It was crazy! But we haven’t heard form her since so that is good!

Sunday 2/8 – Today was awesome! We had church and Elder Bishop and Jarrett had a super good miracle Sunday and had 3 investigators there. They were all awesome! After Sacrament Elder Bishop asked me if I would teach an investigator with him! I said sure. We taught the plan of salvation and it was an awesome lesson! I really felt the gift of tongues in that lesson and was so happy and uplifted after. The kid also accepted a baptismal date! I am so excited for him! We talked with members and we have two American kids in our ward who were missionaries and now are doing a CIA program here and they study here at a good university for a year and the program sounds way way cool! I thought it was a sweet line of work! They are both way cool! The ward is awesome and we had a great time after! Then we ate dinner with the other Elders and did some street contacting! It was super super cold today. Possibly the coldest it  has been! It got about -15 degrees Celsius which is about 5 degrees Fahrenheit! Haha it was soooo soo cold! but it was a great day!

This week was super great and I am really happy and thankful for how much I have learned and continue to get to learn! I read a scripture the other day that I loved loved loved. It was Romans 5: 3-5 and it says, ”

3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience:

4 And Patience, experience; and experience, hope:

5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

I really loved this scripture! I know it is true and I am so grateful for all God has done for me! I love this gospel and I love this work! I love you all so much and I know God loves us all more than we can comprehend. He delights when we reach out in humble prayer to him and as we do that we will feel his love and answers! He has made beautiful plan in which Christ is centered. And through Jesus Christ and God’s plan we can return to live with God and our Families in perfect happiness forever! I love the gospel and I love you all! Have a great week!

Love,

Elder Houston

From Plumber to Barber

Hello family! This hasn’t been a super exciting week with investigators or getting investigators but it has been a cool week! I will tell you a little bit of how this week went!

Tuesday 1/27 – Actually first monday night! Last monday I bought some clippers so that night I gave myself a hair cut! It was difficult and definitely not my Mom’s hair cut for me but it turned out….. Not terrible so that was good I thought! haha but Tuesday we did a music class and Elder Redd and I share the spiritual thought after. It was fun. Then we did proselyting!

Wednesday 1/28– We had District meeting! It was a great district meeting and I got to share the spiritual thought! I shared about prayer! Haha I shared about our experience on the way out to Bar 10 ranch when it rained super hard and flooded and we got stuck in a ditch! I related it in and came to the conclusion that I need to share more personal experience when I teach and instruct. It is so amazing and really makes things better! So I am going to try to do that more! We then went and met a less active, Brother Choi, at his restaurant. Every time before he just lets us help for a minute and then says he is to busy for a spiritual thought. This time we started helping with washing some silver are and he just opened up and we had a really good talk about church and prayer and different things and really developed a better relationship. He committed to pray everyday which was cool! Then we taught english class that night.

Thursday 1/29 -We went and met with the real estate guy who helped us last week. He gave us his number but we weren’t able to meet. We also found out he may already be baptized so he might be a less active so we hope to meet soon and find out more! That night we went street boarding and gave out a ton of english flyers by a subway station. I met a kid there that was handing flyers out for his exercise club or something. We were doing it in the same spot so I was joking and gave him my flyer and then he gave me his and so I handed out a few exercise flyers for him. He thought it was funny so I got his number and he had a little bit of interest in our english class! So we will see!

Friday 1/30 – I turned into a plumber today. While my companion was showering it started flooding a wee bit. So for companionship study we plumbed. I took apart the drain and it was full of nasty hair and just grossness. Haha so we cleaned it and then I did it to the sink as well because everything backed up! Ha so I took apart the sink and we had a really rusty pipe so it busted so we bought a new one and installed it! Haha everything works now so that was pretty exciting. But then the other Elder’s toilet broke so they called a member and he fixed it but said they couldn’t use it til today so they moved into our house! So we had six elders in our 2  man house for the last few days! Haha it has been fun though! We got to go to a bath house in the morning though because it was hard for us all to shower! So we went this morning!

Saturday 1/31– we just proselyted and that is it. And I cut Elder smiths hair today too.

Sunday 2/1– just had church and proselyted!

It was a pretty fun week! A lot of different experiences! I know that he gospel is true. God truly knows us and loves us. He has created this great plan and although we are so weak he gives us a way to become strong! I love this amazing gospel and the blessings it provides! I know Heavenly Father hears and answers our prayers! I know he sent his son and through him we can become better! I love you all and miss you! Until next week!

Love,

Elder Houston

Here is a little explanation on what a “Bath house” is. He explained it in an email to his Dad. (I find it amazing but disturbing)

I didn’t get to tell you about the Bath Houses! They are crazy but way cool! Haha it is three pools at different temperatures. You just take all your clothes of and go in. There is naked Korean guys all over and it is pretty funny but really relaxing too! You just hop in a pool and chill! Haha there is saunas too and showers! They are hard to describe! It was a bit weird at first but I have been to 2 now and it really isn’t bad for me at all now! Haha pretty exciting!
