GoodBye to Jangwii on to Wonju

Well I have been transferred! I will be leaving Jangwii and going out of Seoul into a city called Wonju! It is a mixture of emotions. A lot of hard goodbyes but also a lot of excitement for mountains and other awesome stuff! It will be an exciting experience! I also want to tell you about this last week!

Tuesday 3/24 – Went on exchange with Elder Flora and was senior companion on that exchange! It was pretty fun.

Wednesday 3/25 – Elder Flora and I did trainings and we had district meeting which was great!

Thursday 3/26 – We went to visit a less active today and on the way I saw the biggest dog I have ever seen. I mean the fact that I am including this random fact in my email should speak for itself. I was in shock, It was huge! It was as big or bigger then your average black bear! I took a picture but it does not do justice at all! It was twice my size! I could not believe it!

Friday 3/27 – Today Elder Redd and I decided to do a unique and crazy proselyting approach. (his idea) we went preaching on the train! We got on the subway and he yelled and told everybody who we were and stuff and then asked if anybody was interested. a few cars failed but then we had one care that I gave out like 9 Books of Mormon! So that was pretty cool! that night we went looking for less actives addresses. We found one fairly quickly and were happy about it so decided to look for another Elder Redd had wrote down so we looked and looked and looked and got really close to our church but could not find it! Finally we stopped right in front of our church confused and I looked at our church address…. and it was the address that we were looking for so that was pretty funny but also a little frustrating!

Saturday 3/28 -We did a basketball activity! Elder Smith and I taught Koreans how to play basketball! It was pretty fun but it was outside and we were in church clothes and I got hot stinky and dirty! Haha the means it was pretty dang exiting if you ask me! Then we had a bunch of chicken for dinner, Korean chicken is absolutely delicious! and then we got transfer calls! Elder Chae Subum my dear friend called us! he said Elder Houston you are getting transferred and so I asked where too????? and he said Elder Redd you are staying! And elder Redd you new companion is Elder Pelina! and he said okay and then he said “okay bye!” I said “AHHHH HEY WAIT!” And he laughed and laughed and then said, “do you want to know?” I said “YES!” and he said “why?” and I said, “you are mean Chae Subum!” and he said, “oh really? Okay bye!” and I said “AHHHH WAIT!” and he laughed again then finally told me! haha the AP’s really have to hurry on transfer call night but he took some time to just tease me the little turd but he is awesome! So I am excited to go to Wongju!

Sunday 3/29 – I gave my last testimony in sacrament meeting which was fun and said goodbye to the amazing Jangwii ward! That night we had dinner with Kim Sung Kyu and he is amazing! I love him and he was so kind to have us over! We said goodbye to him after a great dinner with him! It was an awesome time!

Well as you can tell this was another great week and one of my last in Jangwii! I have felt God’s love a lot and learned a lot about humbling myself to submit to God’s will with a happy heart! I am so grateful that God knows us so well and perfectly! I know this gospel is true! I love my dear family and friends at home and I am so grateful for your love and support! I love you all have a great week!

Love,

Elder Houston

The work of the Lord

Well this week was another fun and busy week! It sounds like all the family is doing well! I love and miss you all! Thank you for the kind emails! I am going to go into the week and then hopefully after I will answer a few questions from my fam!

Monday 3/16 – We had a lesson with one of our investigators who is progressing well! His name is yang dou hyun. He is 20 years old and is way awesome! He has been reading the Book of Mormon and we have met with him several times and taught all the restoration and all of the plan of salvation and he is progressing well! We will meet him again soon this week!

Tuesday 3/17 – Temple day. The temple was awesome, I really focused on taking a few questions with me to the temple and it made the experience that much better. I took some good questions and life questions and just was able to receive a lot of revelation. I talked to my MTC companion and Elder Ellingford my amigo! I got to talk to a lot of people who I knew that went to the temple and it was really fun! Then we went to a cool palace place and had a super good time and it was way fun!

Wednesday 3/18 – We had a great district meeting and I learned a lot as always, after we met with our other really progressing investigator who’s English name is Jerry! He is awesome as well! He is 26 and just a super nice cool guy! As you know age is a huge, huge deal in Korea! Age means a ton! So teaching older people is difficult sometimes. But the relationship between older brother and younger brother is also very important. It is called the 형 동생 relationship. The Older brother chooses his younger brother. So Jerry really likes us so he “older brothered” us. This is really hard to explain because it doesn’t really exist. But he likes to buy stuff for us and just likes us a lot. Haha and we like him and respect him but also share the gospel which he really likes! He is progressing well and we will meet him again soon as well! That night we were proselyting and I suddenly wanted to go knock on an apartment building so Elder Redd said sure hopefully it is the spirit! The first door we knocked on was a cute little family that had lived in England for a while and had a lot of English interest and even gospel interest and they almost committed themselves to church. It was a cool experience and we will meet the family again!

Thursday 3/19 – I went on split with Elder Flora to start out the day. He is younger than me so it was my first time being a senior companion. We studied and then went out and proselyted for a few hours and then we went to a university in our area and the zone leaders came and our whole district proselyted together with the Zone leaders! That night we went to a dinner appointment with the old bishop! It was a really good time! I really like him! It was fun!

Friday 3/20 – We weekly planned and then proselyted at gwang woon dae university. As we proselyted we talked to a guy and he had a lot of interest. He was super curious about the book of Mormon so grabbed his stuff and bought us some hot chocolate and we sat down and taught him for over a half hour and gave him a book of mormon! He had so many questions it was a really cool experience!

Saturday 3/21 – There was a bad haze over Seoul today. We have pollution from China that blows in but today it was really bad and so it was super hazy! Elder Redd got pretty sick that night so I had to make calls for a couple of hours while he slept!

Sunday 3/22 – We had ward conference today and it was really good! My good friend 송하늘 song hanuel gave a good talk! Then in sunday school he came and sat by me! He is 20 and just got his mission call! He is an awesome kid! He will go to Australia English speaking! He is a little nervous but I was happy to get to talk to him so much sunday! He also taught priesthood that day! We had a good time! After church we met a guy who works at a real estate place who helped us a long time ago. We met and got talking and he has been baptized! We found a missing less active member and got to know him and shared a short verse from the book of mormon and he said we can meet every sunday. So we hopefully can get him reactivated sometime soon!

Well this was a pretty awesome week as you can tell! Missionary work is hard but so fun! We are in an epic war against satan and his followers but we have angels round about us bearing us up. We have our Savior and Redeemer Jesus Christ leading the way and we will prevail! My family asked a couple of questions about Korea so I will answer! I don’t eat kimchi with every meal but I do eat it often! It is offered at every meal outside of the ones we make for ourselves! We often eat at home but we eat korean food most the time! Yes I crave things from home all the time! But Elder Jarrett gets these little packs of mashed potatoes and biscuits and other hick stuff that he shares with us all and it is AMAZING! Haha and something unique about korean culture…. Often times when we eat we sit on the floor! The Old people exercise like madness! Everyone smokes and drinks. About 95% of the people I talk to smoke and drink a ton! The most common response when we ask people what is most important to them is “money”. They work there bums off 7 days a week to have money and be rich! They work incredibly hard! Those are a few things about korean culture! Anyways I know this work is true and this gospel is true! Heavenly Father always listens to prayers, he knows us and will help us no matter what! He wants us to succeed and is on our side! I know this gospel is true!

God lives, and he loves us.

Wow every week on your mission is amazing. You learn so much, I know we learn from the hard and scary experiences a lot and God tries us a lot and just as much as we can handle that will push us! I have had the opportunity to talk and help a few missionaries this week and receive their comfort and help this week! I will jump into the week now!

Tuesday 3/10 – I went on possibly my last exchange with Elder smith! He is my district leader and one of my closest friends here and we were very busy so didn’t have a lot of time to talk. But we ate dinner all together as a district and then started a special fast for an investigator.

Wednesday 3/11 – We finished our exchange with some studies and training each other and then we went to district meeting where Elder Smith gave an awesome training to us! We ended our fast that night for dinner all together again which is always really fun!

Thursday 3/12 – Well…. Long story that I don’t want to go into but I had to go to the dentist today. I had a filling come out and might have got a cavity. I don’t really know. But I went to a member of a different ward who is a dentist. He was saying a whole lot a korean words I did not know so I just kinda stared at him and nodded then he just started drilling away. It wasn’t too fun… I really don’t like the dentist. ha but after because he didn’t use any numbing stuff they didn’t charge me at all. I said I wanted to pay but they said they wanted the blessings of helping the Lord’s chosen missionaries. That was really cool and I was very happy. That night we met one of our funny old investigators and taught him about the book of mormon a little!

Friday 3/13 – We did weekly planning today which was good. We have quite a few investigators and a few really good ones that are progressing! That night we met a college kid that elder smith and I had met when proselyting. He was awesome and super prepared. I gave him a Book of Mormon when we met on the street and he had already read in the intro! He had researched a little and had questions that pertained to Joseph Smith. We taught the restoration and had an awesome lesson with him! We meet him again tonight at 5!

Saturday 3/14 – We cleaned our church with our ward today! It was pretty fun and we ate with all of them as well! We just did a deep cleaning! Then we met our super blind investigator and he actually came to the Adult session of conference that night! But during he wrote tired on his hand and showed me! Haha it was pretty funny! But we hope to meet him again soon!

Sunday 3/15 – Stake conference day! Stake Conference was good! President Christensen and his wife talked and they gave their kind of departing talks because that is their last stake conference! It is crazy! That night we meet a guy who has a really high squeaky voice. He is old and quite interesting but he accepted a book of mormon! We are doing a book of mormon challenge this month and it is pretty fun and we gave away 6 today and have given 38 Books of Mormon out in a week and a half! My testimony of the Book of Mormon is growing a lot!

Well it has been a great week! At one point one of my great friends Elder Jarrett who I realize I have not talked about nearly enough! I have served with him since I got to Korea and I love him to death! He is from Montana and is seriously like a brother to me! I love him sooo soo much! Haha but he was having a little bit of a rough time and somehow we all got talking about the crazy amount of rejection we have had in our mission. It wasn’t a negative thing though. we were able to strengthen each other with words of encouragement. The Lord sends us to where he knows we can grow and help others! I love my district and I love the work! I am so grateful that God provides such amazing comfort to the troubled or restless mind. Jesus Christ has felt every feeling we have and he knows how to succor his people! I know God lives and he knows us each by name and loves us more than we can comprehend! I know I am weak but through Christ I can be strong! I love you all so much! Have a great week! I can’t wait to talk to you next week! Love you all!

Elder Houston

Awesome Miracles!

This week was an awesome week of miracles including an amazing new investigator! I just found out Courtney is going to the Korea, Busan mission so congrats to her and my mind is super blown right now so sorry if I don’t make sense! I hope you are all well and I love you all a lot!

Tuesday 3/3 – It rained a lot  today! It was crazy! I got pretty wet! We went to a university in our area and it was super busy cause it was like freshmen orientation essentially! That night we met with a guy that we met about a week ago! His name is 이종금 or Jerry! The lesson went awesome! He brought a list of questions about religion that were awesome and we answered them! He is 26 and studying Russian and international relations and he is just absolutely amazing! He accepted a book of mormon and prayed for us! He is really awesome!

Wednesday 3/4 – We had a zone training! The focus this month is the Book of Mormon which I am super excited for! We are doing a book of mormon flood thing and trying to give out 80 in a month per companionship! And sharing scriptures we study in our proselyting! It was a cool training! That night we met with an investigator again but it turns out he is super creepy and scary so we will meet with him once more to see if we can get some progression with him and then maybe drop him!

Thursday 3/5 – Today was crazy and hilarious! First we met with a guy and we went to something that is just like an “Old Person” chill room and we met him there because he is old and we went inside and taught him!  He wasn’t drunk this time so we actually got somewhere with him! Then we met a guy named Kim Min. He was hilarious! He is a radio broadcaster but is 65 and super, super blind! He still walks around and stuff but he is way blind and loud! We ate with him and Elder Redd and I could not stop laughing! He demonstrated the bird coming back to Noah’s ship in the middle of the restaurant! haha He is way fun and we hope to get him progressing even though he is a deacon in another church! Then we were coming back through a market and there were these crazy guys playing instruments in the middle of the market and they saw us “foreigners” so they grabbed Elder Redd and he played gong for them for a second! It was pretty hilarious!

Friday 3/6 – We did weekly planning today got dropped by our super deaf investigator. Deaf  investigator and Blind investigator! Yes that is real! Then we got a new 16-year-old kid that night that met with us and liked it and we taught a little english and then some gospel to him after! It was pretty fun and we will meet him again!

Saturday 3/7 – We did a basketball thing for Young men’s and Elder Smith and I coached! It was really fun and we had a really good time! Bishop was there and “balled” with us! Elder Smith blocked a kid super hard and hit it off a wall and back into his own head hard and got bruised from it! I laughed at him a lot! And we also beat Bishop and a kid in our ward pretty bad! Haha after we felt bad and thought we probably should have let them win but oh well!

Sunday 3/8 – Today was good! We went to church and then to the dream land forest in our area and it was a nice day so it was packed!! It was like a stinking ant hill! Haha holy cow!! Then we just did studies after that!

This week was awesome! I really had some awesome prayers especially later in the week and received some cool answers! I am so happy and just amazed at the Divine Being that loves us so much! I know that we have modern prophets and they are here to lead and guide the church! I am so grateful for that! I know God lives! I know Christ is my Lord and Savior! I know that they know us personally and have an amazing plan for each one of us! I love you all so much! Thank you for all you do! Have a great week! Love you!

Love,

Elder Houston

Hello My Wonderful family!

Hello everyone! I hope you are all well! I Love you all so much! It sounds like my little brothers and sisters are all doing great and I love you all! It also sounds like my parents and friends are all doing great! I love you all so much and will now jump into the letter!

Tuesday 2/24– Tyson asked if we keep track of people that we contact! That was actually something we have been focusing on this week! So I thought I would share with him! Well we do! On Tuesday we had a good conversation that ended with getting a phone number or giving our card to the person! This week we worked really hard.  On Tuesday we had 54 contacts and another day we had 58 which is a ton of contacts! We ended up contacting 245 people this week which is the most I have ever got by a lot! I am exhausted!

Wednesday 2/25 – District meeting was awesome and fun and then today we had a lot of lessons with different people and set several lessons which was really cool!

Thursday 2/26 – We had dinner with a guy that was a potential investigator but he drank alcohol the whole time so he was really drunk at the end so that was pretty fun. Ha guess what lesson we taught!? The word of wisdom! Haha!  I also gave myself another hair cut that night!

Friday 2/27 – We had lunch with the other Elders which was way fun and had a good time! Then we did that weekly planning! That night we were knocking doors when we met a guy who invited us in. (The second person to ever do that since I have been here) He was 75 and really nice! He is Buddhist but listened to us! He doesn’t intend to change but said he would read the Book of Mormon! So that was cool and we are going to go visit him again tonight!

Saturday 2/28 – Today was pretty darn exciting! We had English class which was really fun! I taught with Elder Smith and really enjoy English class! That night we were eating dinner with Elder Jarrett and Elder Bishop and I was telling a story when my companion Elder Redd had a funny look on his face! He said he was a little light-headed and stood up to get a drink. When he got to the sink he passed out and fell back hard! He hit his head on Elder Jarrett’s Chair and then the floor! I thought he was going to go into a seizure so I grabbed the table and moved it out of the way and then kneeled down to see if I could wake him up! He woke up and was only unconscious for about 5 seconds but he had a large goose egg on his head! We called president and he explained! He is fine now still just has a bit of a headache and a big goose egg but was himself right after! I checked him for a concussion right after he woke up and he totally passed fine and was laughing and goofy! He is doing great so no worries there anymore!

Sunday 3/1 – Church was awesome! After we gave a blessing as missionaries to our ward mission leader because he is struggling with High Blood Pressure lately! That night we went to our Bishops house for dinner! His family is super adorable and seriously the best! It was so good they made us some yummy spaghetti and we had a great time there and did family home evening with them! The taught us some fun Korean games and there kids are just adorable when they play! I love their family so much! Haha they are all awesome!

Well that was a quick summary of my week! I hope you are all doing good and feeling the blessings of the gospel! I absolutely love this gospel and know that Jesus Christ our savior and redeemer suffered and died for us that we may live, and not only live again but live in constant comfort and joy knowing we are loved and Christ knows our feelings and loves us! I hope to be able to love all as Christ loves each one of us! I know God is my Father, he provides me with comfort through his spirit the Holy Ghost! I am grateful for this gospel! Love you all and can’t wait to talk next week!
