The Worth of Seouls – Seoul Korea Mission

Another Awesome week in Korea!

This week was full of awesome things and great learning experiences. It is amazing to me how much I learn on my mission. I loved hearing from you all and hearing about your lives and how well you are doing, so many things are different back home, I have now been out long enough where I see things and people who are just completely different! It is weird! Haha and my little brother Tyson is getting baptized in about a month! That is just super exciting! Thank you for all the emails and I hope you all can enjoy and feel uplifted from things I say in my emails to all of you!

Tuesday 4/21 – We did service today and just went around and picked up some trash. Then we had English class and after we had a member baptism because the branch president’s son turned 8.

Wednesday 4/22 – We did street boarding in the market place about 15 minutes from our house and it went pretty good but I just had one of those days or rather moments where I just got wrecked. Haha everyone was just mean and did not want to talk and ignored us and it was just embarrassing and super humbling for me, I was frustrated so had a little prayer in my heart and asked if I could just have somebody to talk to that was kind, not even that had interest but was just a genuine person who was kind, and the next person I talked to was a young guy maybe 27 who was really nice and he used some new vocab about hospital facilities I have been learning and so I got to use them and felt really good, he seemed well to do and was just a real guy who gave me a little piece of his time which was more than what I had asked of my Father in Heaven, it was an amazing tender mercy to me and I was grateful for it.  I got his number and we will call him soon and see if he could possibly meet again! After we met with Kim Cheouljong and taught him for just a second, he asked us about prayer and we taught him and it went really well, he is progressing well but we have a couple difficult hic-ups we have to figure out in the next couple of weeks with him. Then we did weekly planning.

Thursday 4/23 – Thursday we went into Seoul because we had a mission tour this week with Elder Ringwood, who talked in General Conference a few weeks ago, and came on a mission tour here.  He is the area President over the Northeast Asia mission, but the tour was not until Friday so we had Temple day today and slept at the Temple that night. when we first got to Seoul we shopped for a second and then went to Mammoth meat buffet, Elder Yetter and I had a real good time at the buffet and definitely got our moneys worth. It was tasty!! After we went to the Temple, I Love the Temple. I know there is power that lies within the walls of the temple. I prepared a couple of questions, and my temple questions are deep and important to my heart. I had prepared three questions and asked them and prayed about them in the temple! I felt peace but not really answers, which was enough, I wasn’t too discouraged that I didn’t get answers,  so just went on and had a fun night sleeping with all the zone at the temple!

Friday 4/24 – We woke up and went straight to the mission tour.   It was absolutely amazing! Sister Christensen, Sister Ringwood, President Christensen, and President Ringwood all gave fantastic instruction and council to us. I was amazed at the revelation they received for our mission and for me specifically.  The miracle of the day for me was the fact that I still  had my temple questions fresh in my heart and mind, and Every. Single. Question. was answered completely and fully beyond what I could ever ask for or imagine!  I was overwhelmed to say the least by the spirit that filled my heart and was so  thankful to be part of such an amazing meeting.  I was rejuvenated, refreshed and ready to go out and work with all of my heart, might, mind , and strength even more fully than I had been before. It was amazing! After we had lunch and I got to talk to all of my friends in the mission that I had not talked to in a while!  It was an awesome experience.  After we stopped at Costco on the way back out and grabbed some yummy food! Haha

Saturday 4/25 – We met with a guy for the sisters because of some mix up and his wife couldn’t come and we are not allowed to meet with the opposite gender unless someone of the same gender is there to teach as well, so we went and taught this guy for them.  It went well!  He is nice and really liked us. That night at English we gave the message about sacrament meeting and all my Korean left my brain and I was very, very frustrated!  I had just got off of a spiritual high and had a huge motivation to push myself harder!   I knew it was just Satan trying his best to take me down and hold me back so I overcame quick and moved on.

Sunday 4/26 – Church was awesome!  Korean kids are so amazing and such a comfort to me.  They are adorable and have seen me a few times now so a few kids in the ward came up to me cause I am a tease and like to play with them cause it reminds me of my lil’ bros, so I had fun with them.  Then after church we met an investigator in a park. He was mildly drunk and still drinking, but we sat on his card board box with him and taught him.  He didn’t like me because last time they met was on exchange with Elder Yetter who is really good at Korean and so he was mad and kept telling me I wasn’t as good and asked me why I didn’t talk as much, and he didn’t think I could understand. Haha but I could and responded as best I could, but it was still a little frustrating but I reflected back on why that would be happening, and realized again, Satan is trying, he is trying so hard to get me down and discourage me,  so I didn’t let him for long.  I shook it off and kept going.

I have found a lot of cool revelation and answers as I have studied in the scriptures this week about Jesus Christ and his interaction with his senior apostle Peter! I have been able to receive a lot of strength and motivation from that. It is amazing how without our Father in Heaven we truly are nothing but through him and His way we can become more than we ever could be on our own. I love the scripture about boasting not of ourselves, but of our God, anything I can do is because of my Father in Heaven. I bear my humble testimony that there is nothing, no sadness, no remorse, no difficult trial that we cannot overcome, because the savior and redeemer of the world descended below them all, he knows how to succor his people and we can be happy through him. I know Jesus Christ atoned for us and died for us. I know he lives and it is him that I serve and bear witness! I am so happy to be in this beautiful mission and have such a beautiful family to support me! I love my family dearly and I so happy to see them all well! It is a beautiful time in the world! I love you all so much and can’t wait to hear from you next week!

Love,

Elder Houston

안녕하세요! Hello Everyone!

View from the top of my apartment building (1024x768)Hey family and friends and all! You all seem great from the emails I received! I love hearing from everyone and getting all the great and encouraging email! I hope you all continue to be well and healthy and safe, I am just gonna jump right into the week!

Monday 4/13 – We went to Seoul and went to California pizza kitchen with my companions trainer and then went to a bath house and just chilled and then came back out to Wonju.

Tuesday 4/14 – Today I went on exchange with Elder Yetter and we had a good time, we were out proselyting when a car pulled up next to us, it was a less active Elder Yetter had been looking for, he invited us in so we got in and he took us to his work place, turns out he was not in the best state and is a little on the side of crazy but we did our best with him and then left and continued our day, it was an interesting experience but also very fun as well!

Wednesday 4/15 – We had district meeting today which was different then usual because we didn’t have much of a training because we had a lot to discuss with Less Actives and with our branch and problems and how to help and provide assistants to the branch. I also got krispy kreme again because they give us a good deal on Wednesday! That night I had Elder Yetter cut my hair up again! It is pretty short now!

Thursday 4/16 -We were about to do a street boarding activity but then a sudden storm came quick and it started raining a ton and the wind was pretty bad, we grabbed umbrellas and went out to go proselyting and maybe tract a little, as we were going the wind tried to take my umbrella away but I was stubborn and said no and held on tight, but the wind, unfortunately, was more stubborn, it bent the pole in half by my hand then the umbrella ripped and so I had no umbrella and it was pouring and pretty cold! Haha I got soaked so bad and had to run to the church, the wind was crazy strong and I took a couple of pics of my umbrella but they don’t do it justice! Haha it was pretty exciting! That night I ended up on splits with Elder Osborne and we went and talked to a less active at his Bar, his bar was actually sooo cool too! I mean it is the only bar I have ever been in but it was pretty cool, he was nice but super exhausted and we had a pretty good conversation.

Friday 4/17 – We taught out investigator kim Cheoljong today and it was pretty fun, we helped him translate some stuff for his english academy because he doesn’t speak to well, so after that we actually didn’t have a lot of time so we just followed up on his reading, he has been reading the book of mormon well and even marking it! It was an amazing miracle to see him have read and marked the book of mormon! We were both super shocked and so so happy! Right after we had to hurry to a dinner appointment with a member in our ward, Her name is Lee Hyunjeon and she is super cool! Her husband is the first counselor in the branch as well, she made some really yummy food and she is learning English so the Elders corrected some homework and I practiced English with her. She is pretty good for being in her 50’s and only studying on her own never in a class! She served a mission in Busan so we talked about that and about my hometown and all kinds of stuff! She is a really nice lady!

Saturday 4/18 -We had english class and family home evening today and they both went really good, they are super fun! We don’t have to wear suits anymore but the rain has made it cold so we usual wore suits or long sleeves but today was warm enough during the day that we went short sleeve, it started raining later though!

Sunday 4/19 – Church was really good, I am playing piano right now in priesthood which is difficult sometimes but it is fun too! Shout out to my mom for making me take piano lessons when sometimes I didn’t want to practice! Get my lil’ bros taking piano lessons soon!! It will bless them later I promise! After church we met with our branch president and talked about the branch and less actives and things, he is really stressed but he is a great guy and is doing really good! I really enjoy the Branch here!

This week was another great week. I learn so much everyday of my mission, although I have learned and grown so much, the more I learn and grow the more I realize how far I have to go, it is really funny and quite interesting how that works. I know that God is on our side, I know that he and is son Jesus Christ are there to help us and desire us to return and gain the best reward of Eternal life, the are our best friends, I know the ministering of angels is real, I know that angels minister to us to provide help, comfort, and relief. I am grateful for this gospel and for all of you! I love you all so much! I can’t wait to talk to you next week!

Love,

Elder Houston

Listening to the Prophets and Apostles of God!

What an amazing week it has been for me as I got to listen to the prophets and apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ Yesterday and the day before. Conference has meant so much more to me on my mission and I am so grateful to be able to know and listen to the prophets and apostles of God! I am so happy and overjoyed to be serving in the true church of God! I will let you know a little about my week.

Tuesday, 4/7 – We had english class today and we taught and Elder Grimshaw and I gave the message afterwards, we talked about modern prophets and apostles and about conference and invited people to come to conference to hear a council of Prophets and apostles to the church.

Wednesday 4/8 – Today was awesome possum! First thing I want to tell you is…. IIII AATTTEEE KKKKKRRRRIIIIISSSSPPPPYYYY KKKKKRRRRRREEEEEMMMMMEEEEE!!!! Oh man I have missed Krispy kreme but we had to go to zone Conference today which is in a place called Kangnung way out on the east coast right by the ocean and so we had a long bus ride. We got our bus station and there was a krispy kreme in the terminal so we went and ate there. I ate 6 donuts pretty quick but stopped after that! They were super delicious! After we got on a bus. I sat by Elder Yetter and we just talked the whole way out. The ride was absolutely beautiful! There were more mountains and trees and mystical fog rolling all around. Zone conference was great and I learned a lot from our zone leaders Elder Johnson and Elder Demordant. They did great. After we got on a bus and traveled back and it was another just beautiful ride!

Thursday 4/9- I went on exchange today with Elder Osborne! It was a pretty fun day and we saw and amazing miracle. When we were proselyting we talked to a guy and he spoke english to us. He liked us and started talking a little about what we are doing and he admired it. He offered to get us ice cream. so we went and sat down and got some ice cream. We shared a little but it turned into a lesson and a very very spiritual lesson as well. He told us about a difficult divorce just one year ago and how he is now a single dad raising a three-year old son. He told us that he has panic attacks that stem from the difficult divorce and he has to take pills for it. We told him of Christ and his atonement we testified of the beautiful message and we saw it spark a small flame of hope within this wonderful son of the Almighty. We all were on the verge of tears, we gave him a book of mormon and committed him to read, elder Yetter and elder Osborne will continue to teach him the gospel.

Friday 4/10 –  We had weekly planning today which was awesome and that night we went to a members house named park jeoungsun she is an amazing lady. She is the relief society president and has been through a lot. I don’t want to go through to many details but I respect her a lot. She takes care of those she loves it is just a matter of staying on the right side of her. I am amazed by the people and their conversion stories here in Korea. It is so hard to stay a member here and be faithful I respect the people here so much and love them!

Saturday 4/11 –  Today I was given the opportunity to watch conference, it was absolutely amazing. It was so inspired and I felt the spirit so strong. The themes I picked out on the Saturday session is Marriage and Family life and how important that is, hope through the atonement of Jesus Christ, and watching our pride. Elder Ringwood gave a talk and mentioned Korea. He actually served in my mission and he is the area president over Asia. He will come for a conference here next week I think. He gave a great talk I thought and really enjoyed it! I received a lot of revelation and felt the spirit burning in my heart as the prophets and apostles of Jesus Christ council and instructed us!

Sunday 4/12 – Today was another Great day of watching Conference, the themes I saw were the same but more geared towards Christ and the hope we can have through his atonement if we are patient with ourselves and others. I loved seeing President Monson talk and loved his talk about temples. I love President Monson and sustain him with all my heart! I love his words and was so happy to hear him in the priesthood session as well as Sunday morning! I also thought it was really interesting how Elder Ballard called out by name Tindr and Snapchat. I thought that was really interesting. And they talked a lot about using phones too much! It was really emphasized especially tindr whatever that is and snapchat. Wowza! I loved conference and learned so much!

This week has been another amazing one! I absolutely love wonju, I love conference and was able to feel a lot of strength when it is hard at times to face so much rejection and know that it is rejecting us as people and christ as our savior. It was so comforting to watch conference with a different mindset and really be humbled by the fact that I can’t be the best at everything and I cannot do things of my own free will, I am still learning to be humble and accept God’s will in all things and I have a long long very long way to go but I would like to think I have made a little progress and was better than yesterday. Missions are hard, they are, but I am so grateful to be in this mission at this time and to have had a lot of hard things because with these things and these feelings of failure and defeat, I have truly come to know Christ more fully, I have come to realize the depth and magnitude of his atonement is incomprehensible because of the all-encompassing effect it has on every single one of us. I love this gospel I love this mission and I am grateful for difficult times. I love my Father in Heaven and Christ whom he sent. I know the gospel is true. Have a great week everyone I love you so much and can’t wait to talk to you next week.

Love,
Elder Houston

First week in 원주 Wonju!

Well I am now out of Seoul and into my new area! I love it here! It was a little hard to adjust and still is but it is also really fun! It has been a pretty crazy and full week so I am going to let you know as much as I can!

Tuesday, March 31 – I was still in Jangwii and I met for the last time our two most progressing investigators and said goodbye! I met 이종금 aka Jerry and 양오현 yang dohyun, and taught them both the gospel of Jesus Christ and just chatted and said goodbye to them! They are both super awesome and i hope the best for them! I will hopefully be able to call them and keep in contact with them throughout my mission and I hope they continue to progress! That night we had the last dinner as a district which was fun but also hard!

Wednesday, April 1 – We got up early and headed to transfers. At transfers I saw a bunch of people I knew and also said goodbye to a lot of people like Elder Smith and Elder Jarrett! Hopefully I will get to see them again before they go but I don’t really know. I met up with Elder Osborne and we took off to our new area. After an hour and a half we arrived and met Elder Grimshaw and Elder Yetter! They are both pretty cool guys! I like them both! Elder Grimshaw is a good kid and we get along fine! He is a little more laid back and reserved then my last companions but he is really cool! Elder Yetter likes B ball and we get along pretty cool. He is pretty stereotypical sports lover guy but we seem to get a long really well so far! So I like my district! They are all pretty fun! We live on the 18th floor of an apartment here in Wonju and have a pretty nice view! It is pretty cool!

Thursday, April 2 – Went and saw the area and the church! This area is huge! I may not be able to cover all the ground in my time serving here. It is really big! It is really cool too. The people in Wonju love exercise so much and are obsessed with health and basketball is actually really big. There are basketball courts all over and a professional basketball team’s arena is right across the road from where I live. The team actually just played in the Championship game of Korean basketball but lost. Supposedly they have 3 of the best players in the league and we have one of their numbers cause he is a potential investigator. So that is cool. There is a lot of walking here too! It is awesome!

Friday, April 3 – We did weekly planning today and we also met an investigator named 김철종 kim cheouljong.  He is doing pretty well! He is progressing and we will meet him again soon. He is about 50 and has an English academy and has been reading the Book of Mormon. That night we ate some yummy chicken that was fairly cheap. Korean chicken is super yummy!

Saturday, April 4 – We had english class today and I met the two sisters serving in our area named Sister Anderson and Udall. I also met all of our English class people and they were pretty fun! After Elder Grimshaw and I did a Family home evening type thing! He is the district leader so we were in charge and we taught the first presidency message and then I taught how to play “spot it” as best I could. We played “spot it” and it was a total hit and way fun! Haha we had a blast! I also started feeling more comfortable and fit in to this new place

Sunday, April 5 – I went to church today! We are in a branch here of about 25 to 30 people! They seem pretty cool actually! The members seem nice but our meeting is backwards. It is priesthood then sunday school then sacrament so that is weird! Also I play piano for priesthood here so that will be interesting. We taught a recent convert who is 20 and is soooo awesome! I really like him and I am excited to work with him! That night we did studies and I studied a talk by our beloved and blessed Prophet, Whom I sustain, Thomas S. Monson. It was his talk in November 2013 and it was the conference after his wife died and he gave an amazing and emotional talk called, “I will not Fail thee, Nor Forsake Thee.” That is one of my favorite talks of all time. I know his words are inspired and as I listen to that I am amazed at the inspiration of the true prophet of God. I stand as a witness of God and Jesus Christ who he sent but I also stand as a witness of his chosen Prophet Thomas S. Monson. I love him and sustain him. I would highly recommend this amazing talk by him. I loved it and I hope you will as well! I love you all! I know this work is hard and we are given trials and difficulties so we may progress and become stronger and better than we were before. I know that through any trials God is with us because he has promised, “I will not fail thee, Nor forsake thee.” (Joshua 1:5) I love you all and hope you have a great week! Can’t wait to talk to you next week!
