Hello Family and friends!

This week was a week full of miracles, so much so that I can’t fit it all in my email this week! But wow it was great! I am going to jump right into the email!

Monday  8/24 – We had a guy that we met in the morning and picked him up as an investigator the lesson went okay! We proselyted the rest of the day!

Tuesday 8/25 – Today was great! We had temple day and wow… I love the temple! I really do! It is absolutely amazing and I am learning more and more how to receive revelation in the sacred house of the Lord! I had another great experience there. Afterwards we went to the war museum and also we ate at a burger buffet so that was stinking good! We had a solid day today!

Wednesday 8/26 – Today was pretty great! We had district meeting which was really great and after district meeting we were on exchange so I was with Elder Lee and it was pretty great! That night we got a referral and I called and he wanted to meet that night so we did! We met that night and he is a stud! He needs help with English for a big interview coming up so we helped him but then we taught the gospel and it went really well! We have met with him every day since!

Thursday 8/27 – Today was pretty fun! We closed the exchange and had 4 appointments. We only met with two but one was from a scary church here and was really not a good lesson, he kept telling me how the book of Mormon wasn’t true and I kept testifying it was, he got a little heated so I asked him if he had read it. He said “no” and I said then how do you know? He had to pause to think so I took advantage and again testified about how I had read it and I do know it is true and he got mad and said we will meet later and I will bring my bible master friend. We kindly said okay and he was off!

That night we met brother Lee Rok Wan who we met yesterday and we taught him English and the gospel and again it went great! He has no religious background at all but he prayed and he said he didn’t feel anything. I committed him to pray again! so…

Friday 8/28 – Friday came around! We proselyted for a while and then met with Lee Rok Wan. I asked if he prayed the night before and he said he had. So I again asked how he felt. We expounded on prayer and answers to pray on Thursday after he felt nothing, and he said, “I noticed something this time, I felt calm”. He prayed about his mother (who is suffering with cancer) and he felt calm and comforted! We taught another lesson and he amazed us because he knew all the answers to the plan of salvation with no religious background AT ALL. After he seemed to know it all I asked, “how do you know all this?” He said, “I studied this book” as he held up the Book of Mormon. He studied the chapter we assigned him and felt like he should study more so he did. Turns out he looked in Alma 40 which is exactly what we taught! What a miracle and tender mercy!  We did weekly planning that night!

Saturday 8/29 – Great day! We met with Jake again and it went way better than we expected! He has really struggled with alcohol in his life but he quit. He has been two months and he is down from 2 packs a day to 2 or 3 cigarettes a day and he has more interest then we first realized. He is just trying to find a church that is best for him and is so kind to us! We will meet him again soon. Later we met with Lee Rok Wan again and again he felt comfort and read about the plan of salvation, it is going great with him! We also ate dinner with him!

Sunday 8/30 – Today was another day of miracles! We had a great day at church and really enjoyed it.  We are getting to know the ward bit by bit. After we rushed to an appointment with a potential investigator who wanted to feed us at his house. Well….. what a miracle, I can’t explain it all. We got there and they were expecting the other missionaries they met so a little awkward at first but they were sooooo kind and just and amazing couple. They are in there 50’s and just an amazing couple. They have had lots of contacts with “Mormons” and missionaries. The woman met missionaries first when she was 7 then in 2002 they met consistently for a few months with some sisters then with in the last few years met with some Elders. Then they met with us… The last missionaries they met with was “just as friends” as they said.  They had been going to another church but recently they have stopped going to church because they think the people are not living like Christians. They don’t think there church has the truth and they like how Jehovah’s witnesses live but they don’t think they have the truth either. But they love love love how the Mormons live and they aren’t sure about them. They know some but had a million questions and fed us delicious food and want to meet every week! Wow… That is not even all the miracles in detail. That is just an overview but they are prepared and amazing! We are excited!

This week was great! We set a new mission standard of 3 new investigators a week which most kids thought was ridiculously hard! It is hard but my companion and I have really strived for it and prayed for it! Since starting 3 weeks ago we have got 10 new investigators and we got 5 new ones this week. That is the most I have ever got in a week by far! It has been amazing! I know this gospel is true and I know that God lives and loves us! I love you all so much! Talk to you next week!

The Work of Gathering Israel!

This week was another amazing one, my testimony has grown a lot, I have studied a lot about the early days of the church, the restoration and the early apostles, and missions of early saints and stuff! It has been great and I have learned a lot from those early saints in this great and last dispensation! We have seen some cool things this week as well!

Tuesday 8/18 – We met with 2 new investigators today! The first was Noe Seungyu and we taught him the whole restoration, and it went pretty well, he is pretty old but we think he understood all of it, then next was another old guy, his English name is sandy! He is really hard of hearing but a really smart guy and has a lot of cool life experience, we shared a little about the Book of Mormon and then took off to our service project with old  people! It was pretty cool, I really love doing service there! They are all so funny! That night we also taught English class!

Wednesday 8/19 – Today we had District meeting which was good! My district leader is Elder Lee, I served with him in the MTC and in Jangwii too! After we had “new senior training” because I am a new senior companion so that was pretty good, and the rest of the day we just proselyted.

Thursday 8/20 – Just a proselyting day, nothing exciting

Friday 8/21 – Weekly planning was good and a Sister missionary wanted a blessing so we got the opportunity of giving her a blessing. The rest of the day we had a lot of proselyting and that is really about it!

Saturday 8/22 – We taught English class today and we also met a new investigator there whose English name is Q! Yes… Just the letter! He wants to learn English and the gospel together! He is also old and a pretty cool guy! That night we had a recent convert/investigator activity that was pretty good. We watched part of meet the Mormons and we watched the missionary mom part which makes me cry every time I see it dang it! Haha but yeah it was great!

Sunday 8/23 – Church today was good as always and the ward here is pretty solid! We pick up a member every week from a mental hospital and he is super nice and kind to the missionaries! After church we proselyted over to a university by the Han River because we had a dinner appointment with a member in that area, it was a good walk and we got there and had some delicious Korean food! We had a ton too! She was a really good cook and I loooove squid! She fed us some squid kimchi pancakes and some kimchi soup and some yummy mystery meat! It was all delicious and super Korean!

This week was just great! I have had many opportunities this week to drop to my knees and truly have a faith-filled conversation with Heavenly Father pleading for his help and spirit, I have learned a lot this week but one thing I really came to understand more fully is how weak we are, no matter how hard we work on our own, if we don’t have the spirit, and God on our side, it really isn’t enough! We have to have the Lord with us in order to do this work, we have to be more faith-filled servants, I am grateful for those trials of our faith that help our faith grow! I have learned so much and am so grateful for this opportunity to learn and grow and work! I know Heavenly Father lives, I know his son Jesus Christ came to this Earth and established his gospel and suffered and died for us, I know that the gospel has once again been restored in this last days through the Prophet Joseph Smith and that the Book of Mormon truly is the word of God! I know this gospel is true! I love you all so much! I am grateful for all your examples in my life and all your amazing emails! Please have a great week and I can’t wait to talk to you next week!

Love,

Elder Houston

A Whole New World!

I know I have been here for a week or so now but I am still adjusting! It is like a new world! There is so many people it is crazy! Haha the culture is thick too so there are a lot of things that are just different! I love this new area but it is like a new world so it is still an adjustment but a good one! I have had a pretty great week with my year mark and my birthday! The b-day package was awesome!

Tuesday 8/11 – I was on exchange with Elder Grover today! Yes Elder Grover from the MTC! Me, him, and Elder Weiss are all here from the same group in the MTC.  Elder Weiss and I live together but Elder Grover is companions with the District leader so we went on exchange! It was soooo much fun! We saw so many miracles! Everyone we talked too was prepared, we got so many numbers and it was one of the most successful days on my mission! It was crazy! We were both amazed and happy! We also did a service project by going and hanging out with old people at a retirement center which I loved!

Wednesday 8/12 – We had a zone Conference today! We met at the office which is in our area, and we had a conference so President Sonksen spoke for a while then our zone leaders spoke and then President Sonksen again! It was great! We talked a lot about to have the Faith to Baptize! President is really pushing that because of the discouragement that we face a lot of the time! I am really excited to exersize more faith to baptize! After we had a dinner appointment with the Turner family! They also work on base here! They are so awesome and we had a lot of fun and had some delicious cafe rio quesadillas with cafe rio sauce!  Wow it was so good! Haha it was a great night!

Thursday 8/13 – Today was my year mark aka Hump Day! For hump day we proselyted all day! It was awesome! I also did a lot of self reflection and set some goals and had a great day of pondering on my work thus far and my work in the future! It was a little tough because I want to be a great servant of the Lord but I am so imperfect and so it was very humbling to reflect and realize what I need to improve and lean on Heavenly Father for support!

Friday 8/14 – We did weekly planning today and tried to meet an investigator but just met his wife. They are Chinese and super nice! We will try to meet him soon!

Saturday 8/15 -Today was a special day! It was….. Korea’s National Independence day! Whaooo!! Oh.. and… it was also my birthday too.  I got a great package from my family and loved it so much! It had yummy food and cute ideas and things for my hump day and p day and it was just perfect! I loved the pictures and notes too! It made me so happy! That day we meet with an investigator and his girlfriend for the first time. He had read a few pages from the book of Mormon and it was a pretty okay meeting! It was are first but we taught them both! We also taught English class and then that night we had a dinner with the Ferrins, a family on base.  It was pretty stressful actually but I won’t go into to much detail! It was fun!  We ate at a famous Indian restaurant and it was really good! We had some yummy food and a great night!

Sunday 8/16 – Church was great and we had a fun time as always. We proselyted today and it went pretty  good and we had a goal to meet so that night we diligently made calls and called through the area book and found a lot of cool people and got our goal and the Lord blessed us to make a few appointments! It was great!

This week was great! I had a lot of time to reflect and think and it was really good! I truly do have a testimony of this gospel. Although I am imperfect and super weak and I know I can overcome because of Jesus Christ. He walked the path and he descended below it all.  He accomplished the atonement. He knows, the perfect son, who never spoke ill, never did any wrong, had to know how the rest of us feel in order to save us, so he walked the lonely path so that we don’t have too! I know through him we can overcome all feelings of selfishness, pride, and temptation. I have felt the strength beyond my own! I know he makes weak things become strong! I know that knowing Christ is knowing Heavenly Father they have the same purpose, to bring to pass our immortality and Eternal life. I know when times are hard, things are rough, we are in the pit of despair and grief that there are good things to come because of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I have seen it, I have felt it, I stand as a witness of the truthfulness of this gospel! So when you are down, “Don’t you quit, don’t you give up, there is help and happiness ahead!” I love you all and I am so grateful for your influences in my life! Have a great week and I can’t wait to talk next week!

Love,

Elder Houston

Sindang The Heart of Seoul!

Well it happened! I got transferred! I went to transfer meeting on Wednesday and got my new companion Elder Jung Urim! He is awesome! He is from Korea and is in his 5th transfer and this is his second area! We are white washing our area  which means two missionaries moved out and we both are moving into the area together and starting from nothing! It is a challenge for sure but a lot of fun! We were both out in Kangwon province so more the countryside so it is a big adjustment to do missionary work in the heart of one of the biggest cities in the world but it is fun too!

Tuesday 8/3 – We just rode the bus to the temple and bad traffic into Seoul made it a long ride! We stayed the night at the wonderful temple!

Wednesday 8/4 – We woke up at the temple and headed to transfer meeting.  I got my new companion and we headed to our new area and our new awesome house! We switched with the sisters because there are more Elders and so our house is sooo nice now! It is big, awesome, and it even has AACC! Haha I only sweat kind of a lot when I sleep now! I am sooo happy about it! We just unpacked and got settled in and looked at the huge map of our area and proselyted a little!

Thursday 8/5 – We had all day to proselyte today! So we proselyted to one of the most famous places in Korea and back because it is in our area. It is called Gwanghwamun! It was pretty far from the house and we were exhausted after because we still had the stress of transfers weighing us down! Haha but we did okay and slept like babies when we got home for the night!

Friday 8/6 – We did weekly planning and then again just explored the area while we proselyted! We surprisingly haven’t got lost once! Honestly it is just the spirit taking care of us because it is just amazing that we haven’t got super lost yet! A crazy rainstorm hit and so we hid in a mart and bought an umbrella for 3 bucks. Right as we walked out of the mart the building right across the street got hit by lightning and shook the ground! Haha it was nuts! Everyone started screaming! Haha except for me and my companion because we were just admiring the amazing power of nature and knew God was with us! Haha it was really loud though and our area got hit by a lot of lightning really close! It was crazy!

Saturday 8/7– It rained and lightning super hard again today but it was awesome! Whenever ever that happens I just am inclined to sing “How Great Thou Art!” So I do! Haha we had English which was fun and then we had a baptismal service that night for an investigator and a kid who turned 8! It was pretty great! Our church building is huge! It is the headquarter of the church in Korea! It is 4 stories and has……….. a Basketball Court!!!! Wahhoooo! I am going to make good use of that I think!

Sunday 8/8 – Our ward is like 170ish members strong maybe a little less but still huge compared to my other areas! I had to give a short little talk too and introduce myself so that was super scary! But hey it went okay and yeah! We also have a lot of American members in our area that go to an English branch elsewhere but live in our area so we get to eat with them sometimes! So my comp and I got to go eat with the Anderson family! They were super nice and super cute! He is a contractor working in the military! We had lasagna! It was delicious! Wow! Haha it was a great day!

This week was busy and awesome and stressful and fun! I know this gospel is true with all my heart and I know that what I am doing is the work of God! I have seen many blessings and miracles! I know Jesus Christ is our savior and redeemer and I know our Father in Heaven has created a beautiful plan of salvation of which he, Jesus Christ, is the center! I know this is a true message! Thank you all so much for the emails this week for my Birthday and year mark! It meant so much! I could feel so much love from all of you! I am so happy to hear from all of you! Have a great week! I can’t wait to talk to you next week!

Love,

Elder Houston

Well…I have some news!

Well this week was pretty awesome and I have some news! I am getting transferred out of Wonju! I will be going back to Seoul! I will go the very heart and center of Seoul to an area called 신당 sindang (SHEEN-DANG)!  It is where president lives and the office is! It is the headquarters for a lot of church stuff and mission stuff! I am really sad about leaving Wonju but I am excited for Sindang! I have heard great things about the area! I am also really nervous to see what happens! I do not know my companion or my assignment in the area yet so I will find that out on Wednesday!

Because I am being transferred I have already sent a lot of my stuff away so I don’t have my usual stuff to remind my of the week! I usually write it all down on a paper to remind me but I didn’t have time this week so I will talk a little about what I remember!

Tuesday – Can’t remember much, we did street boarding and had a lot of success! And we had English which Joseph came to and helped with! He is awesome!

Wednesday – District meeting went great! Our awesome Zone Leaders and my good friends Elder Dixon, and Elder Ney came and attended! It was pretty great! After we did street boarding and that night may have been the highlight of my week! All our week! We really did meet an angel and tender mercy and miracle named Joseph Schlosser! He invited us over for real American hamburgers, bacon, cake, and loaded us with cereal and candy and peanut butter! He is amazing! It tasted sooo good and we were in a little heaven! He is an amazing person and has touched each of our lives here in Wonju!

Joseph aka Brother Schlosser gave us some great food! I was so happy!

Thursday – Not much I can remember! I was on exchange with Elder Buckwalter and we proselyted all day!

Friday – We had weekly planning as usual and tried to visit a few members! We also met an investigator and taught him English! He is a little cutie and it is going pretty solid with him! His mom actually took a Book of Mormon as well!

Saturday -I went on another exchange today and I went with Elder Law! We proselyted all day and met a monk guy that was just not a fun guy! He said some super weird stuff about prostitution and just really gave us sad feelings! So we got out of there quick and went and bought some watermelon milk which is one of my favorite drinks here! Haha We had English and game night that night which was fun!

Sunday – Today was good but hard! I had to say goodbye to all the members! I gave a talk as well along with Sister Seo Juun and Elder Ashby bore his testimony as well! Sister Seo Juun is awesome! She is finishing her mission and will return to Busan! I call her 누나 which means older sister but has a different connotation in Korean! It is more serious and you call people your brother and sister all the time if you are close! She has helped us out a lot and been a great example! It is funny cause she is the old sister but she is tiny! Haha but me and Elder Ashby listen to her and do what she says! haha She gave a great talk! I took pictures with a lot of members and said bye! That night Joseph invited us to his house again because I was leaving.  We were going to have pancakes but instead he had some left over burgers and hot dogs so we ate those with some chips! It was so awesome! I had a really good talk with him after church and we talked a lot!  He reminds me of my Dad in some ways so it was really nice to talk to him! It was a great day!

Well this week was great! I am so grateful to have served in wonderful Wonju! I love it here and I have so many great memories and friends! I will miss it dearly but I am excited to go where my Lord would have me go! I know that Heavenly Father lives, he loves us and is there for us! He answers our prayers and pushes us to be better so we can one day return to him and become like him! I know Jesus Christ is my savior and redeemer! He lived and died and rose again that you and I may do the same! I know the gospel is true and through the atonement we can overcome anything that is not of God! I love you all and am so happy to hear from you! Have a great week and I am excited to talk next week!

Love,

Elder Houston
