The Worth of Seouls – Seoul Korea Mission

Working, Working, Working

Hello everyone! Sounds like you are all doing good! That was super cool and weird to see Lexi coming home from her mission! I can’t believe she is already home! I know she was a great missionary and that seemed like so much fun to be reunited! Now Grandma only has two more grandchildren out to worry about! haha! Everyone seems great though! I miss you all and am happy you all seem to doing good! I have a few things to talk about this week but not much! So I will just jump right into it!

The first is of course Rak Won Lee! We are still meeting and he is still doing great! The highlight this week was we had a member present lesson with him at a members house and dinner with them as well! It was really great and we talked about Lehi’s vision! It went great and he is still doing great! He actually planned to come to church despite the huge Holiday on Sunday, but his family went somewhere  and he had to call and tell us he wasn’t going to make it back on time! But I just talked to him on the phone and we will meet him tonight! He is awesome!

The next thing I wanted to talk about is the super cool holiday here! It is the biggest in Korea! It is called Chuseok! It was great! But missionary work was slow! The actual holiday was Sunday but it is celebrated for 4 days, Friday through Monday! For Chuseok we had a conference on Friday. We went bowling and then had a fun conference! We learned about Chuseok and Korean history and church history stuff and it was awesome! The next day, we woke up and it was my favorite day of the year! DEEP CLEANING DAY!!!!!!!!!!! I was so excited and oh what a day it was! We cleaned and cleaned and it felt so good and everything got cleaned and it was so rewarding and our bathrooms were disgusting so Elder Fisher and I cleaned them and I only almost threw up 5 times! And I like to think I have a pretty strong stomach but it was disgusting.  Once we got into the cracks and drains and pipes! Haha but now…. oh now, our bathroom is white, and it is so clean you could eat off the floor! It is great! The house is clean and fresh and it was just so much fun! I loved it!  We had a grand time! On Sunday not many people came to church but it was fun with the people who were able to come! It was a pretty fun weekend all in all!

This week was good, It was different and a little slow but good! I have studied about the atonement a lot recently, mostly because I have started to understand just how important it is and how incomprehensible it is, but trying to understand how it was made and how it affects us and plays a part in our lives brings so many blessings and love and comfort into our lives, I understand how the atonement was a sacrifice of the savior, he sacrificed himself, and his father allowed him to be sacrificed. God loves each of us so much that he allowed his Son, to be sacrificed for us. What a testament to the infinite love of our Father in Heaven and his son Jesus Christ! Just because sometimes we sin and make mistakes which are always evil, that does not make us evil. Evil action does not make us and Evil person, there is always hope because of that atonement! The most terrifying and difficult tasks and trials can be overcome through his grace and mercy, when we don’t know what to do, he does. I know God feels my feelings, it is through him that I am sustained during the hardest of weeks, he is there, he listens, and he knows! I know Heavenly Father lives and loves us, I know Jesus Christ is his son and came, suffered died and rose again for us! I know this gospel is true!

Love,

Elder Houston

Through the Weak and Simple!

Hello family!

For my email this week I am not going to go through everyday but rather the highlights of the week and yeah! It sounds like you are all doing amazing!  And it sounds like there was a crazy flood in close by my hometown! I hope everyone is okay! My prayers are with those families! I will jump into the week now!

The first highlight I wanted to talk about is an update on Rak Won Lee and how he is doing! To start, on Tuesday we had an awesome lesson and talked about baptism and I invited him again to be baptized. He said yes this time and we gave him a date and he said yes! It went great! The date is Oct. 17th and we are preparing together now! We met with him almost everyday and helped him with english and he is now keeping all the commandments as well! On sunday we had a member present lesson with him which was awesome and she invited him to come with us to her house on Wednesday and talk again! He said yes and is really excited! He is such a fun guy! I love him to death! Things are going good with him so please pray for him and his baptismal date!

The next I wanted to talk about was a kid named Ha Jung Mahn. He was a referral we got but somehow we got the wrong number! But the referral said he had been taught all the lessons and had a baptismal date and was awesome so I called the office Elders and at first was pretty frustrated with it but then we got a new office Elder who was willing to help me out a little more and he found the right number for me and we called and we met him! It was great! One of my homies in the ward was at the church because she teaches institute and after saw us teaching so had some food and came in with her friend and said let’s eat! So we ate and they built a great relationship because she and our investigator are both 23! She got home from Busan last year in November so she is a good member missionary! We had a member present and it went great! We hope to meet him again soon!

The next thing we did was help our new military branch couple! They are a senior couple and we had to go in and help them set up wifi and their phones cause they don’t speak any korean and it was good to build a relationship with them! Their names are the Cannon’s and they are a good couple and bought us ice cream after so that was a lot of fun!

Lastly we had dinner with the Shamo family! They were awesome! They fed us some yummy American food and we chatted and shared a message! There kids were adorable and reminded me of my little brothers and sisters except for my brothers and sisters seem to be growing up so much it is crazy! But we had a lot of fun and they are really awesome!

This week was great! I saw a lot of miracles! It was also a hard for me. I pondered a lot and I don’t know it was just really hard too, but it was so amazing to see the Lord take me in my weak and sad state and still help me to see miracles and be able to do what I needed to do to help our investigators! It is amazing to see the hand of the lord take such a small, weak, and simple person such as myself and make it so I can still work and do what He needs done! I know that if we are humble, that makes the atonement work. When we are humble the atonement can work in our lives. It can change and mold us into something that God wants us to be! Something better! I am grateful for the atonement! I know this gospel is true! I love you all and will talk to you next week!

Love,

Elder Houston

Note from Taylor’s Mom:

We got a fun surprise this morning!  An email from an amazing member family that is working in Korea and fed our missionary!  I loved, loved, loved the email so wanted to share it with you!

Hello!

You don’t know us, but we fed your awesome missionary and his companion tonight!  When we asked if there was anything in particular they wanted for dinner, he answered “anything American!”.  So we fed them meatloaf, mashed potatoes, veggies, rolls, and some cinnamon rolls for dessert – I think that was American enough for them – they ate well and seemed satisfied. 🙂  I’m sure you know this (but it might be nice to hear while he’s on the other side of the world) – what a great young man you’ve raised!  He is so personable, very kind, asked if he could help with anything, played with our kids, shared a great message about family prayer, and was simply a delight to have in our home.  He seems healthy and happy, is working really hard, and having success!

We just thought you’d like to know. 🙂

P.S. – We found out that he knew of the Shamo’s in Hurricane – they happen to be related to my husband.  Small world. 🙂

Exhilaration in Exhaustion

Well this week was another busy week! Busy is really good, that is something I have learned on my mission! Being busy is way better! The title of my email is Exhilaration in Exhaustion and I think that is so true! There really is an amazing Exhilaration in being Exhausted because of the work you have put in! We have had a great week!

Tuesday 9/8 – We had service today which I love, we work at an old folks home. The old people there are so cute and I just love them so much! They are the best and we make things with play dough with them and then do puzzles with them! They are sooo funny! I love them! After that we grabbed a quick dinner and went to English class and prepared and I got some things ready to try to start improving our class! It went pretty good I think!

Wednesday 9/9 – We had zone training today which was really good! I really really thought it was inspired! It was almost all in Korean and I understood almost all of it so that was great! It was super good though! After we met with Rak Won Lee our investigator and helped him with English and then taught  him and it went pretty good! Afterward we had a dinner appointment with the Magleby family on base! It was a lot of fun! We had some yummy meatballs and we shared with them about faith which I have been studying about lately and deeply thinking about! It was a lot of fun to share that with them!

Thursday 9/10 -Today we had a little time to proselyte but we did that for a minute and then I had some things at the church to do for English class so I did that and made Elder Jung make some calls while I did that and then we went out to hand out English flyers for a half hour or so but the first guy I handed a flyer to turned into a 30 minute street lesson and a return appointment! Hahah so that was cool! We only handed out one flyer… Hahaha miracles! That night we met with Rak Won Lee again and he was doing really good! We taught him the Word of Wisdom which was a big lesson and it went good, it was a little awkward at first but with some encouragement he accepted!

Friday 9/11 – We had weekly planning today which was great! We set more solid plans! After we met a potential investigator named Q! Haha just his English name! He is the cutest old korean man I ever done seen! He has an Australian accent when he speaks English and is really quite good! He is a great guy! We taught English for a bit then the gospel! After we met Rak Won Lee and taught him again! He is doing good! He is progressing well! He is so kind and really funny!

Saturday 9/12 -Today we met with Jake and then had English class and saw Q there and also met wtih Rak Won Lee at English and after and then we had stake conference after that! They all went really great but it was a very busy and packed day of stuff! I was so exhausted tonight!

Sunday 9/13 -We had stake conference and then a little time to proselyte and that night we had a dinner appointment with the Anderson family again! It was a lot of fun and we ate well! We really enjoy ourselves at those dinner appointments!

Well this week was really a solid week! I was able to see a lot of miracles! I have studied a lot about Christ’s atonement and the love that comes through that atonement! I have learned so much about how he not only suffered for our sins but for everything, pains afflictions and weaknesses! He is the only person who knows the thoughts of our heart perfectly, even more so than we know it! I have a really hard time understanding myself and organizing thoughts by myself but if I really on Jesus Christ then through the spirit I can do all of that! I can overcome, the blessing that have overwhelmed my life because of the atonement are innumerable, unimaginable, and totally infinite! It is amazing the mercy of our Heavenly Father! I know this gospel is true! I love you all and can’t wait til we can talk next week!

Love,

Elder Houston

Faith, and this beautiful work!

FIRST OFF HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAY TO YOU! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR MOMMY! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!!!! Even though it is technically on tomorrow! It is today for me in Korea! Haha but I hope you have a happy birthday Momma!

This week was great, we had lot’s of cool experiences! I loved the pics and videos and emails I got today! They are all just fantastic! Thank you for sending me those! Okay time to jump into the week!

Tuesday 9/1 – We met had a sketchy meeting that my comp set up with some random person who we have never talked to on the phone! We assumed it was a guy…. (bad idea) but when we showed up, it was a girl which is against the rules! We can’t meet with just girls, or even talk to just girls without a guy present! Haha.. so it was a little weird when I had to tell her we couldn’t meet and not sound really sexist! I tried to refer her to the sisters but she really wants to proselyte to us specifically about her church. It was a weird ordeal but fun! We left and she wants to meet again but I said you have to get a guy and I think it might be a bible bash situation but we will see where that goes! Later we did service and had English which were both awesome!

Wednesday 9/2 – Today we had a District council type thing which was really good and fun and stuff! Haha anyways after that we met with Rak Won Lee our most solid investigator and we taught him and helped him with English stuff! He is doing well! He is praying and reading everyday and he learns the content really well and has felt the spirit a lot so we know the spirit is working on him! So that is good!

Thursday 9/3 – We had a mission tour today and Elder Whiting of the Seventy came down from Japan for a mission tour! He is a scary guy kind of! Ha but he gave some really really great council to all of us! Our focus in our mission has been faith and he gave a lot of council just by revelation about having faith and being a faithful missionary because faith brings power and he needs faithful and powerful missionaries to start changing Korea into a more successful place! It was great! That night we met with Rak Won Lee again and it went good but he was a little tired!

Friday 9/4 – We went and ate at a place called Ashley’s for lunch with some members and it is a really nice place and we ate a lot and it was good. Actually I may have ate a little to much…. Hahah I think that is the first time I have literally ate myself sick! It was American buffet and yeah I got sick at the end and couldn’t finish my ice cream! Haha darn. I think it is because Korean food is more healthy but yeah! Haha it was a lot of fun too! After we met with Rak Won Lee and it was good again but he was kind of tired again but he is super goofy and fun and still progressing!

Saturday 9/5 – We didn’t have a lot today! Just English class and then Rak Won Lee and proselyting! Solid day though!

Sunday 9/6 -Today was super busy! We had church and Rak Won Lee came to all three hours and then after we taught him with a member and it went really really good! Having a member there helped a lot and the lesson went well! Then we helped him with English and we had just taught he ten commandments and he tried to cheat on a question I asked him and I said, “No Cheating”! He said, ” The 11th commandment” Hahaha but then he said I wasn’t a prophet so… haha I just told him that was an Elder Houston commandment and he thought it was pretty funny! After him we planned for a bit and then we went to a dinner appointment with a family on base and it was awesome! The base is just like you are in America! Wow it was so fantastic and the Hill family was super cool and fun to talk too! After that we went to meet an appointment that night and turns out he just wanted to be friends and had no no no gospel interest so that was a bummer but yeah that was our day!

All in all it was a really solid week and a really solid time! I learned a lot as always! Specifically the last couple weeks I have really learned a lot about Faith! I have seen faith work miracles! I have felt the power that does come from faith! I have a testimony of what faith can do! I have a testimony the Jesus Christ is my Savior and yours and my friend! I know he lives and his atonement makes our Father in Heavens plan for our happiness possible! I know that Joseph Smith was the prophet of he restoration! I know he truly was called of God, I know that he was a prophet of God and through him our loving Father established the fullness of the gospel to never be taken from the earth again! I am so grateful for this beautiful message! I know this gospel is true! I love you all so much! Thanks for everything you do! Have a great week and I will talk to you next week!
