The Worth of Seouls – Seoul Korea Mission

Well…I have some news!

Well this week was pretty awesome and I have some news! I am getting transferred out of Wonju! I will be going back to Seoul! I will go the very heart and center of Seoul to an area called 신당 sindang (SHEEN-DANG)!  It is where president lives and the office is! It is the headquarters for a lot of church stuff and mission stuff! I am really sad about leaving Wonju but I am excited for Sindang! I have heard great things about the area! I am also really nervous to see what happens! I do not know my companion or my assignment in the area yet so I will find that out on Wednesday!

Because I am being transferred I have already sent a lot of my stuff away so I don’t have my usual stuff to remind my of the week! I usually write it all down on a paper to remind me but I didn’t have time this week so I will talk a little about what I remember!

Tuesday – Can’t remember much, we did street boarding and had a lot of success! And we had English which Joseph came to and helped with! He is awesome!

Wednesday – District meeting went great! Our awesome Zone Leaders and my good friends Elder Dixon, and Elder Ney came and attended! It was pretty great! After we did street boarding and that night may have been the highlight of my week! All our week! We really did meet an angel and tender mercy and miracle named Joseph Schlosser! He invited us over for real American hamburgers, bacon, cake, and loaded us with cereal and candy and peanut butter! He is amazing! It tasted sooo good and we were in a little heaven! He is an amazing person and has touched each of our lives here in Wonju!

Joseph aka Brother Schlosser gave us some great food! I was so happy!

Thursday – Not much I can remember! I was on exchange with Elder Buckwalter and we proselyted all day!

Friday – We had weekly planning as usual and tried to visit a few members! We also met an investigator and taught him English! He is a little cutie and it is going pretty solid with him! His mom actually took a Book of Mormon as well!

Saturday -I went on another exchange today and I went with Elder Law! We proselyted all day and met a monk guy that was just not a fun guy! He said some super weird stuff about prostitution and just really gave us sad feelings! So we got out of there quick and went and bought some watermelon milk which is one of my favorite drinks here! Haha We had English and game night that night which was fun!

Sunday – Today was good but hard! I had to say goodbye to all the members! I gave a talk as well along with Sister Seo Juun and Elder Ashby bore his testimony as well! Sister Seo Juun is awesome! She is finishing her mission and will return to Busan! I call her 누나 which means older sister but has a different connotation in Korean! It is more serious and you call people your brother and sister all the time if you are close! She has helped us out a lot and been a great example! It is funny cause she is the old sister but she is tiny! Haha but me and Elder Ashby listen to her and do what she says! haha She gave a great talk! I took pictures with a lot of members and said bye! That night Joseph invited us to his house again because I was leaving.  We were going to have pancakes but instead he had some left over burgers and hot dogs so we ate those with some chips! It was so awesome! I had a really good talk with him after church and we talked a lot!  He reminds me of my Dad in some ways so it was really nice to talk to him! It was a great day!

Well this week was great! I am so grateful to have served in wonderful Wonju! I love it here and I have so many great memories and friends! I will miss it dearly but I am excited to go where my Lord would have me go! I know that Heavenly Father lives, he loves us and is there for us! He answers our prayers and pushes us to be better so we can one day return to him and become like him! I know Jesus Christ is my savior and redeemer! He lived and died and rose again that you and I may do the same! I know the gospel is true and through the atonement we can overcome anything that is not of God! I love you all and am so happy to hear from you! Have a great week and I am excited to talk next week!

Love,

Elder Houston

Hot and Humid

I don’t know if you have been checking the weather much in Korea but if you were to check you would find that it is very hot and very humid! I have found out I sweat a lot! Haha I always get sweat in my eyes and my upper lip sweats a lot as well! Hahah it is pretty fun but it feels like a sauna every time you go outside and we don’t have any air conditioning so the house isn’t much cooler! Haha it is really fun though! This week we were a little busier which was good! I will take you through all the days again!

Tuesday 7/21 – We proselyted for a while today and had a lesson with a new investigator who is 20 years old and it did not go well. It was not the investigator either it was us. We didn’t work together and there was a contentious spirit and a contentious spirit is from the devil so the spirit could not be there too! It was very difficult and frustrating, especially after the lesson! But that is what the atonement is for, our shortcomings and mistakes. I feel so bad and guilty but through Christ and his atonement have been able to overcome and move on in the way he would have me go! That night we had English class and we shared the message which went pretty good I think!

Wednesday 7/22 – We had district meeting today and talked a lot about our branch and how we can better help them! We discussed a lot about the members and the relationships in the ward! After we proselyted out to an area we really like cause it is super forest/jungle like and it is just beautiful! We saw a bunch of cool bugs! We enjoy it out there! After we came back and ate at a bakery for my companions year mark in country! It was pretty tasty!

Thursday 7/23 – We proselyted a lot today and then we visited some members as well!

Friday 7/24 -We did weekly planning today which was good and we planned for a lot of stuff! After that, while we were on the street, a sister called and said to hurry to the church! Turns out they had met an american guy who was in the military in Wonju and he was a member! He didn’t know there was a church there and so he had not been able to go to church for about a year an a half! His name is Joseph Slowsser and he is super cool! We talked to him for a while and he was really excited to see us! After we talked for a while Elder Ashby and I went to meet with Seo Hyunseok who is a recent convert and have dinner with him! It went super good and we got a lot closer to him than we were even expecting! He is 19 and such a sweetheart! I love him to death!

Saturday 7/25 – Today we got to go help a member in the morning and got some yummy food from her too! Then we went and taught a kid English and after had to run a few miles to the bus station and it was soooo hot! Haha we were sweating a lot but got there and headed to Gangneung for a music night! Joseph came with us too and he really enjoyed it! He is 6’5″ and a really big guy and it was fun to see him on the bus! He has been here for about a year and goes home to his family in 3 months! He is from Boise Idaho and is 32 years old! He is a really nice guy! The music night was great! There was singing and violins and it was a lot of fun!

Sunday 7/26 – Church was great and Joseph came for his first time in a year and a half and was just thrilled to be there! I had to translate sacrament meeting when our district presidency gave talks so it was so stinking hard but I did my best for him! I translated for him all day when members wanted to talk to him and it was really hard! It was good for me though! That night we had a dinner appointment with Sister Park and it was great and Seo Hyunseok came again to the dinner and it was super good! We had some delicious meat and we really needed to build a relationship with sister Park and we did! It was great!

I am so grateful for the gospel in my life! It means so much to me! I have felt God’s love and grace more in my life than ever before! I know that Jesus, the historical man who came out of the unlikely town of Nazareth is the Christ, son of God. I know he truly did atone for us and if we simply follow his teachings and his example we can gain salvation and return to live with our father in Heaven! I know our Father in heaven loves us all and I am grateful for that knowledge! I know this gospel is true! Have a great week and I can’t wait to talk next week!

Love,

Elder Houston

Hello Everyone!

Note from Taylor’s Mom:  We had the wonderful opportunity to be in Salt Lake to hear Taylor’s mission president president Christensen and his wife speak in their home ward for their homecoming.  It was a special day for us!  We didn’t get a picture with President Christensen, but we did recognize one of his companions, Elder Redd, as well as a dear friend that he was in the same district with and loved very much, Elder Smith.  It was neat to meet them and get to chat for just a minute.  The missionaries that served with President and Sister Christensen, stood and sang “called to serve” in Korean and what a treat that was for us.  This is a special group of people and we are very lucky we had the opportunity to be there.  These are the pictures we sent to Taylor that he is referring to in his letter:

Houston Fam meeting Elder Redd

Now on to Elder Houston’s weekly email:

Hey everybody! This week was still pretty slow but we had a few more things that were good and we had a better week I think! My testimony has been able to grow a lot recently because life is full of difficulties and as we overcome we can become better and our testimonies can grow a lot! I have been studying diligently and really had some awesome studies lately! I was so happy to here that you went to President and Sister Christensen’s homecoming! They are absolutely amazing! It was so fun to see that you met Elder Smith and Elder Redd! They are super awesome too and I miss them a ton! Haha it made me so happy to see those pictures! I am going to just jump into the week cause not a ton of exciting stuff this week!

Tuesday – We street boarding in the market place and then proselyted and had english class which was really fun as always!

Wednesday – Today we had district meeting for the first time in several weeks! It was good we talked about forgiveness both gaining and giving it and I felt a lot of peace and comfort and awe and the great power and plan of our Father in Heaven! The rest of the day we were out on the street proselyting until it was time for planning and bed!

Thursday – I went on exchange with Elder Law today and it was pretty good! My district so far in Wonju has not been nearly as close as the one in Jangwii was! We still have a good time though! We proselyted saw a huge dog, saw a scary satan dog and met some really cool people! We street boarded and we set to appointments with to awesome guys which was just awesome! That night we went to a bakery with the other Elders and got some food and ate it in the big soccer stadium! It was a lot of fun!

Friday – Today we had weekly planning which was good but pretty boring because of lack of investigators! We planned a lot for members and other things though! The rest of the day we proselyted and made calls!

Saturday – Today was busy but super awesome! I had a really great day! After studies we went to my Koreans mom house! She said she is my korean mom! She is the nicest lady ever! She is so awesome! We went to her house for lunch and the other Elders brought their investigator! We had some delicious meat and wow “it ate well” as we say in korean! After my companion and I taught the other Elders investigator and it went really well! Also Sister Lee Hyunjeong, my korean mom, added a lot of amazing insights and testimony including her conversion! Wow it was amazing! It was great! We then had english and that night we had a movie night and watched meet the Mormons! It was great! I absolutely love that movie! We watched it with our branch and after we had some food that us elders made……….. it was not very tasty! Haha but hey we tried! It was a great day full of fun and stuff!

Sunday – Church was great! I have a really good little friend named Junyeong! He is 3 and we hang out! He is super cute and really likes me! He is the branch president’s son and him and his older sister are my “homies”! They stretch my korean vocabulary though! Haha he called me an elephant today…. Hahah good reason to use the word for elephant though! They also teach me a lot of fun little korean games! The rest the day we just proselyted!

This week was a good week and it was really full of a lot of good stuff! We did do a lot of proselyting again but that is okay! I have studied a lot about Faith and about gaining a witness! I have had great studies lately! I read a lot about how sometimes we don’t get a special feeling or any kind of witness at all! Sometimes we go a period of time without! We need patience and faith! That can be very hard at times but I read a quote that I really loved! I don’t remember exactly but it was something like, “Going forward in Faith when we don’t feel faith-filled sometimes brings the greatest blessings” I realized that sometimes we aren’t filled with faith and that is okay! As long as we move forward with acts of faith we will be okay! I know missions are hard but through the trials of a mission we can truly grow and learn! I am grateful for this mission and this opportunity! I love you all and hope you are doing well! I can’t wait to talk to you next week!

Elder Houston

Wonderful family and friends!

Hey family and friends! I hope and pray you are all doing good! I loved all your emails and am so grateful for them! Sometimes on a mission there is just times when it seems to be a cold streak! Haha things have been pretty slow last week and continued this week! We again did a lot of 전도 or proselyting! I have learned a ton and I love wonju though so I am still just loving every second of it! Ho JaeWon is doing great! He is still going to church but we haven’t seen him since his baptism! I don’t have a ton to say but I will go through the whole week!

Tuesday 7/7 – We met with a new investigator, he was really a little different! He had really long hair and wore a lot of make up and it was just a weird lesson! But hey he is a new investigator and we are excited about it! We taught him english for a little bit and then we taught him about the gospel! That night we had english class which went really good and was pretty fun!

Wednesday 7/8 – We just proselyted all day today! We were out talking to people all day long! It was a solid day though!

Thursday 7/9 – We had zone training today which was awesome! We jumped on a bus to go to kangnung and the ride over was just amazing! It was super rainy and foggy and the forest filled with fog was just a beautiful sight to see! I was so happy happy happy! The zone training was just great! Our zone leaders Elder Dixon and Elder Ney are just amazing and I am so grateful for them! They gave a great training and I felt the spirit strong! The ride back was just as awesome! Super pretty and exciting! The rest of the day we proselyted!

Fridday 7/10 – We had weekly planning which was good but a little boring because of lack of people to plan for and then we proselyted all day!

Saturday 7/11 – We had a thing called Golden Voice today! It is an English club we volunteer at! It was so fun and we are super good friends with the people there and a lot of them come to our english class as well! We talked and taught English and it was really fun and after they took us out to eat a really nice meal! We ate steak and wooooooowwww I was soooo happy happy happy! It was a great time! Later we taught our english class and we gave the message which went really good and an english class member commented on my korean improving a lot and I was soo happy! Then we had game night which also is always fun!

Sunday 7/12 – It was a good sunday! I bless or pass the sacrament every week so that is a lot of fun! And then during third hour we watched kids while the members had a meeting and after church I watched kids again while the branch president had a meeting with my companion and the first counselor and there wives went to the hospital to visit somebody. So I watched kids for another to hours! We had to get permission from president and he said it is okay! the kids are so hilarious! I love them all and they brighten my day!

Well that is pretty much all I have for this week! It was a solid week! I hope you are all doing good and I hope you are all happy, safe, healthy and can feel God’s hand in your lives. I know that Heavenly Father lives, he loves us, Jesus is the Christ, he truly came, taught and lived a perfect life of love, he suffered for us that we may return to live with him and his Father who sent him. Through him we can do all things! I am grateful for the atonement, the atonement that is personable and all inclusive. The very act of love that makes it possible to be clean and forgiven, bearing no scars! I know this gospel is true! I know Christ is our savior, I serve him, I testify of him, and I am striving to be like my perfect master! I love you all so much and can’t wait to talk to you next week!

Love,
Elder Houston

President Sonksen 도착했다 (Arrived)

Hello Family and friends! How is everyone? I hope you are all doing great! I pray daily that you are! Well this week wasn’t to crazy so I don’t want to go through everyday because a lot was just proselyting and nothing to excited! But there was a few exciting things to talk about so I want to hit the highlights!

Thursday 7/2 – Well I went on exchange today with Elder Ney our Zone Leader! He and my great friend Elder Dixon are our zone leaders! They are just great! I had a great exchange with Elder Ney! He is a great friend and a great missionary! We proselyted and street boarded all day and had a great time! We met a lot of cool people and saw some amazing miracles! We ate together at a yummy restaurant in the market place and then we made some calls that night! I also told stories to Elder Dixon and Elder Ney after planning! Haha! We sat around a candle and I told stories like a Houston does! It was great! Elder Dixon is from Australia and loves B Ball! We have known each other pretty much my whole mission and he is just a stud! We love to talk about ball and play together! I love him to death!

Friday 7/3 – We got up early and played Basketball with our Zone leaders just outside of our apartment! It was fun! After we got ready and went to the church for a zone conference to meet our new President! We met President Sonksen and he is a really fun and nice guy! He is going to be a good President! Getting a new President is weird! We met him and his wife and they are very happy and lively and are great people! We are excited about them! I had an interview with him after and it was good! Really brief but great! It was fun to meet him and get to know him! I also got my packages from the conference! I loved the letters inside! I read them all and was soooo happy! I also loved the office quotes! You should have heard me laugh and laugh! That was great! My Hawaii shoes are comfy, comfy and lol the food is going to be just delicious! Also mom you nailed the squirt gun idea! I have already put them to good use! It was just a great package!

That is actually the majority of what happened this week! The rest was a lot of proselyting and other stuff! Missions are really hard but they can stretch us beyond the capacity that we think we have! My testimony has been tried and tested more than I was expecting on my mission! This week we had a good friend of ours that owns a store in the market tell us he thinks we are all a lie and just say things that were just really hard to hear and it shook us up a little, he is our good friend and it shook my companion pretty good! I didn’t realize how much my testimony would be tried and tested so much but I am grateful it has because it makes me truly seek with an open heart and makes me have a stronger testimony every time it is tried! I am grateful for the opportunity to be on a mission! I know Heavenly Father loves each of us, I know Jesus is the Christ and His is the only name that we can return to live with God for Eternity! I know that Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God I know that the Book of Mormon is true! I love you all and I hope you have a great week! Thanks for the awesome emails! I can’t wait to talk to you next week!

Love,

Elder Houston

Summer is Here!

Hello everyone! It is so nice to here from all of you! I hope you are all doing great! It seems like you all are! This week was really good, we had a lot of fun adventures, not a much teaching investigators but some exciting fun stuff!

Tuesday 6/23 – We taught an investigator today named Richard, it went really good but we don’t know if he really wants to meet again that much! He is a nice guy though and he asks some really good questions! So hopefully we will get to meet him again! We also did street boarding today which was pretty hard and I met a lot of really rude people but that is okay. We got a few numbers and talked to a lot of people so that is good!

Soaking Wet from the Rain

Soaking Wet from the Rain2 (768x1024)

Soaking Wet from the Rain

Wednesday 6/24 – We got Krispy Kreme today for the first time in a while! It was soooo goood! I was really satisfied to say the least! Court also went to the MTC today so that is crazy and awesome! She is gonna do great on her mission! Today was also a fun day because we had a crazy rainstorm! So we new the rainstorm was coming so we went out with a umbrella but got a ways out and saw the Sisters who didn’t have an umbrella, so we gave them our umbrella and ran away so they couldn’t protest, it was raining good but not crazy so we just kept going! After we tried to visit a member we started to head back and the rain let up, I said I liked the rain and didn’t want it to stop………. haha my companion said that too….. Then it hit, and it was a downpour to say the least! From the time it hit hard we were completely soaked in seconds, too soaked to take a taxi, so we walked.  It rained so much and so hard the streets flooded. I was walking through ankle deep water before I knew it! Haha it was so much fun! Crazy, but a lot of fun! We finally got back and I think I would have been less wet if I jumped into a pool! Haha it was crazy! My timbuk2 bag did great though, only a teeny bit of water sneaked in so all my stuff except my vocab flash cards in my front pocket were fine! and my wallet was a little soggy too! It was awesome though and we got back safe! We had a lot of fun and really enjoyed it!

Thursday 6/25 – Today was super hot and super humid from the downpour yesterday! We just proselyted all day!

Friday 6/26 – Thursday night it rained all night so the morning on friday was amazing! It dropped in degrees a ton! I would guess 30 degrees! Haha We actually studied in blankets cause we got cold! It was so weird! but the weather that morning was just amazing! The sun shining through the clouds through our opened windows was just amazing, it was so peaceful and studies were just peaceful and amazing, a great opportunity to think about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and there greatness and feel the peace of knowing how much they love us. It was absolutely amazing because Korea has a ton of pollution so you can only see a few hundred yards but the rain cleared it out so you could see the vivid green mountains all around and it was stunning! Everything seemed so close! It was such a great morning! We also did weekly planning and after went out and proselyted until dinner. For dinner we ordered chicken and went to the huge soccer field/track and sat in the stadium and ate chicken and enjoyed the nice weather and the huge mountain beauty in the background! It was super fun! That night we visited a member and it was really great!

Saturday 6/27 – We had Englsih class and game night and both went good!

Sunday 6/28 -Church was awesome, we had Elder Edwards family in church with us because they came to pick him up! He served in Wonju about a year ago. His family was super nice! His little 12 year old sister reminded me of Abbey! She was really funny! Haha I liked her! It was fun to have them there! Church was really good, after my companion had a lot of meetings and stuff as second counselor! I was in charge of watching the kids while they met! What a blessing that was! The Branch Presidents kids are adorable and it is great Korean practice! I watched them for like 3 hours and we played all kinds of Korean games and his little girls stole my camera and took a bunch of pics! It was really funny and cute! Haha we had a great time! We ate dinner and proselyted for a little as well!

This week was just great! I had a lot of fun! I miss Ho Jaewon a lot but he is doing well, he went to a branch activity last Saturday on Jeju Island and said he had a really good time! He is just awesome!

My mission is awesome I am loving every second of it! I am so happy to be serving here! I know that Jesus Christ is our Savior and redeemer, I know he lived, died and now lives again.  I know through him we all can find peace happiness and be saved! I know that Joseph Smith was a true Prophet and through him our loving Father in Heaven has reached out to us once again! I know the Book of Mormon is true and I know that this church is true! I love you all and can’t wait to talk to you next week!

Ho Jaewon

This week has been amazing! It has been busy, busy, busy and full of amazing miracles. Miracles I don’t believe I can even adequately describe in words. I am so grateful to be serving a mission and seeing the Lord’s hand sweeping through the nations preparing the way for his return! This week was so busy that I am just going to do similar to last week and just hit the highlights!

Most of the highlights will have to do with Ho Jaewon 허재원! But the first one is Courtney’s B-Day was this week and she leaves in 3 days to go on her mission! So Congrats to her! She is going to do great!

The next one is we met with Ho Jaewon every day this week! Every time we met him he was more prepared than we had thought and it was so amazing! Every time we met with him we saw some amazing miracles! We met him a lot and on Thursday we met him with the zone leaders. He had his baptismal interview and all went well he passed!

On the same day of his baptismal interview we had a zone conference to say goodbye to President Christensen! It was hard but a really good conference! The zone actually came to Wonju for the conference which was really nice as well! It was a really great day!

Then we came to Saturday! Today was a day I will remember for the rest of my life! We left early and went to the church, we turned on the font and listened to it fill up as we studied! What a great sound it was! We then set up and members started to come, Ho Jaewon then arrived with his bags because he left to go to Jeju Island his hometown for 2 months right after his baptism! We had a great baptismal service! The members gave great talks, he was so happy and did so great! He has grown so much in our time meeting with him! He is an amazing person! After the talks we got in the font and he was baptized! It was amazing! I asked him how he felt in the bathroom after I gave him a huge hug and he said, “a little strange, but really good strange!” My companion then gave him the gift of the Holy Ghost! It was such an amazing experience! After the service we had to say goodbye which was sooo hard! We both love him so much! He went to Jeju island for the summer but will go to church there!

That night after the baptism we went to a sister in our wards house, her husband passed away and she needed some heavy lifters so my companion and I were on the job! We moved some heavy furniture, 4 big cabinets 2 fridges and a freezer! Once I was walking backwards and forgot I was in Korea so I smashed my head on the door frame super hard! It hurt pretty bad but I was laughing pretty hard! The Sister Lee was so grateful and fed us some delicious meat! It was a lot of fun!

The last thing I wanted to talk about is the follow-up with Ho Jaewon. We told Ho Jaewon we would call him soon after his baptism but before we got the chance, he called us the next day, Sunday. He said he had gone to church and met with the Elder who we called in Jeju and told them to find him. He said he loved church and the branch. Neither Elder Ashby or I could believe he was the same person. He was so different, more mature, more confident, less awkward, more happy, more loving and all around just amazing! After the call we both looked at each other in shock and awe and the miracle of the gospel. We were so grateful for the change we have seen the gospel take in his life! He has grown so much more than I thought possible in these last few months! He is doing so great and is just an amazing person! What a blessing it was to see him change and become new and better through this wonderful message! I am so grateful to have seen the influence of the gospel so brilliantly displayed in someones life! I am so grateful for the atonement of Jesus Christ that reaches out to all and includes all of our feelings! I am grateful for that very atonement that truly leaves no scars! I am grateful for this gospel and the joy it brings! I love you all so much and I hope you have a great week! I am excited to talk to you next week!

Love,

Elder Houston
